“The Hotel California” ~
A fictional place, but full of urban myths and legends.

The “California Hotel” photo above, is NOT of course the place of the legend from the Song, nor was it the headquarters for Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan. I’m actually not sure of the history of the actual hotel in this photo, but it called to mind my memories about this urban legend. (The photo above MIGHT be the California Hotel of historic landmarks, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Hotel as it was in Oakland. The California Hotel historic is a important cultural center for the African-American community of San Francisco’s East ay during the 40’s-60’s, it experienced severe economic difficulties and turned into subsidized housing in the 80s)

I first came across the urban legend in 1990 at the Starwood festival when I was hanging out with a Satanist from the Church of Satan who first told me the tale … “one of the members of the Eagles was at this bar and got drunk with Anton LaVey’s daughter, she brought him home that night to her hotel room (at the Hotel California where supposedly the headquarters of the Church of Satan resided), they became lovers. Apparently he was so tied up in the affair with her that he disregarded showing up to band practice or responsibilities, and in a sense “never could leave” the hotel. When He snapped out of it, he apparently wrote the song about the experience hanging with the Church of Satan. A similar tale was told to me by my mentor Isaac Bonewits, founder of ADF (Ar nDraoicht Fein – A Druid Fellowship) who briefly joined the Church in his youth, but was so rambunctious and a trouble maker, the Church of Satan actually kicked him out of their group. (I do know that to be true as I’ve seen historic film reels of him in their ranks. Apparently he was recruited after creating a parodic devil’s throne upon which he proselytized on at UoC Berkeley to harass the local bible thumper on campus. They ran across him, were impressed, and asked him to join. )

I digress, back to the original legend. Some claim that Larry Salter, the Eagle’s manage admitted in the Waco Tribune-Herald (Feb. 28, 1982) that the Eagles were involved with the Church of Satan. Oddly the Church of Satan was first legally registered as “Hotel California” (legal entity name). But the Eagles claim far and wide, they were not associated with the Church and it was a leap that people jumped to. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_California)

The Eagles claim that the “Hotel California” is an allegory about hedonism and greed in Southern California in the 1970s. As they first experienced California at that time, they were impressioned that California was about money, drugs, women, and fame – true hedonism, and they were disquieted by it all pushing that un-ease into their lyrics to warn others about the dark underside of such adulation – “a loss of innocence”, corruption of the artist in California imprisoned in a gilded prison that the artist freely enters that he cannot leave. It is not actually a place, but a metaphor of the west’s music industry and its effect on musicians ensnared by it. (http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/hotel.asp)

To make matters worse, many conspiracy theorists have marked that “Anton LaVey” (leader of the Church of Satan, San Francisco) can be seen in the balcony window as depicted on the album cover for the record “Hotel California”.

The urban myth has odd facts and twisted thoughts behind it, and whether or not those with the inside knowledge are telling the truth and the Eagles are covering it up to save their reputation, or it is quite a bit of hog-wash and conjecture, we’ll never know. Frey and Henley claim that as much as people want to know what the song was about, they really don’t know themselves. It was an attempt at a “twilight zone” influence and many beliefs are abound. Of course the fundamentalist Christian organizations still claim it is a Satanic song, the band was gifted their success by dealing with the Devil (dueling banjos) at the crossroads giving their lives for their success. They won’t let go of this urban legend regardless. The Holidays


* April 23, 2011 Concert @ The Transit Bar * Downtown Canberra * ACT * Australia *

While exploring downtown Canberra, I popped into the Transit Bar, underneath where I was staying in the Canberra Hostelling International for a night out downtown. The Holidays, a local Australian band, was just returning from their first ever tour of the United States. Set to go on stage by 8 pm, they had a bit of a late start but rocked the house with some great Indie, Pop, Alternative tunes. They were kicking off their Seven Million Mornings national headline tour beginning with this gig, moving on to Melbourne, then around Australia, and on to Europe. Opening for them were their guest Gold Fields. Rating: 3.4 stars out of 5.

Burning Man

Burning Man Festival

Burning Man is a week long arts and entertainment, sustainable and self-reliance festival that occurs every year embracing Labor Day. From 1986 until 1989 there was a Summer Solstice bonfire ritual held on Baker Beach in San Francisco by Larry Harvey, Jerry James, and their friends. Here they claimed, not inspired by the “Wicker Man” movie (they state they hadn’t seen it before their party), they would burn a 8-9 foot tall wooden man with his smaller wooden dog, and they did this not for Pagan offerings, but rather as an experiment in art, community, radical self expression and reliance. Apparently Larry’s girlfriend Janet Lohr’s friend, Sculptor Mary Grauberger had been throwing Baker Beach bonfire parties prior to Larry picking it up after she stopped organizing them. By 1987 the “Man” was 15 feet tall and by 1988 at a whopping 40 feet height making it much more of a concern on the beach to the authorities. They eventually called their event “Burning Man”. Because they didn’t have a permit for such a fire on the beach, they had to relocate, and in 1990 a separate event was put on by Kevin Evans and John Law of the Cacaphony Society in the Black Rock Desert on its large dry lake. They billed it as a dadaist event with temporary sculptures and situationist performance art called “Zone Trip #4: A Bad Day at Black Rock”. The Baker Beach Burn “Burning Man” event, after having been kicked off the beach, dissassembled their “Man” and brought it to “Zone Trip #4” just in time for the event. One of the Cacophonists in attendance, Michael Mikel, concerned that the attendees would not be familiar with the harshness of the desert environment, took on the name “Danger Ranger” and formed the “Black Rock Rangers” to make sure everyone was safe. It was here in 1990 that Black Rock City and “Burning Man” was founded. Word spread about the event and people from all over the world started to flock to this desert event. It was assembled of participants only with no paid or scheduled performers/artists, no separation from art space and living space, and no other rules except not to interfere with another’s experience and no guns were allowed in central camp. In 1991 they filed for a legal permit with the Bureau of Land Management evolving to a formal partnership in 1996 for them to own the name “Burning Man”. 1997 Saw the biggest changes in structure to the event when the remaining organizers formed the Black Rock City, LLC after John Law, Kevin Evans, and others left. As the BLM refused a permit for the event, it was moved to “Fly Ranch” that adjoined the Hualapai Flat mini dry lake bed. Since the event moved to Washoe County permitting, more heightened rules and laws were enacted, banning driving of non-mutant or service vehicles and guns, imposing a low speed limit of 5 mph for art cars, a imposed curved grid street structure, no campfires or tiki torches, all burnt art must be on approved burn platforms, bans on fireworks, firearms, and dogs. It was also then that a 7 mile long temporary plastic fence to be erected to surround the event as a 4 foot high “trash fence” to catch wind blown debris. After 2002, no attendees of the event could go beyond this fence. In 2006 was the first time that Burning Man was covered extensively by television, which continued as “TV Free Burning Man” from 2006-2008, and the coverage nominated for a news Emmy Award in 2007.

The man remained 40 feet tall until 1995. By 1997 it reached 50 feet, and by 2001 at 70 feet, from 2002-2004 at 80 feet tall, Then was reduced in size from 2005 until 2008 when it was pumped back up to 84 feet, and at an amazing 104 feet by 2010. In 2007 a well known prankster named Paul Addis set the Man on fire four days ahead of the schedule and was arrested for the incident. The Burning Man crew was able to still erect a replacement effigy in time for the scheduled burn. By 2010 it reached an attendance population of over 51,454 recorded paid participants. Burning Man attendees nickname themselves “Burners”. The festival is based on community, artwork, absurdity, decommodification, revelry, participation, self-awareness, self-reliance, and self-sustainability. In those regards, it has nothing to do with the modern Hippie movement even though the un-knowledgable compare the two as being the same. Burning Man is governed by 10 principles – (1) radical inclusion, (2) gifting, (3) decommodification, (4) radical self-reliance, (5) radical self-expression, (6) communal effort, (7) civic responsibility, (8) leaving no trace, (9) participation, and (10) immediacy. Burning man is a “gifting economy” in like to the tribal potlach ceremony, and relies on the unconditional “gifting” of resources. No cash transactions are permitted between attendees of the event (though the event will charge for entrance tickets (pays for event), daily ice (benefits the local Gerlach-Empire school system), tea and coffee (benefits the event) for those wanting it). The event is clothing-optional and nudity is very common. Once in the event you are highly discouraged from leaving. A re-entry wristband costs a high price if one needs to exit and re-enter. Portable toilets are throughout the event, a temporary airstrip/airport is setup along the event boundary, hospitals and law enforcement stations are setup throughout the city, as is ice stations. All attendees are responsible for bringing their own food and water as none can be guaranteed to be obtained elsewhere in the city. The Event is “Leave No Trace” and all attendees are expected to collet M.O.O.P. (Matter out of place) when observed. All attendees are expected to participate as much as possible, no water is permitted to be drained on the playa and much be either evaporated in a drain field or ported out when attendees leave, no fires without approved burning platforms, and observance of US and Navada federal, state, and local laws. Every year a different theme transforms the event. Art and entertainment, is centered around these themes each year. Numerous registered and un-registered theme camps are all around the city, including over 100 bars, and numerous art or mutant vehicles parade around the playa during the days and nights. Otherwise many participants have their own transportation with bicycles that they bring to the event. Some art is funded by ticket sales through art grants. In addition to the “Man”, a giant “Temple” is constructed and burnt on the last night of the event culminating ritual and interfaith spiritual offerings, prayers, sacrifice, and observance in its participation.

Itchy-O @ Smash Club (Denver, CO)

An AMAZING Marching Band by the name of “Itchy-O” graced our presence and spiced up the already fantastic party to enlightened levels at Odd Todd’s Junk Yard “Smash Club” this particular Saturday. A major compilation of ambient, experimental, and ghettotech music with full ski-mask covered dark musicians beating and banging on their drums sending shivers through the veins of all onlookers. Based out of Denver, this act (wherever it mysteriously appears) is never to be missed. They are in the works of producing a record with the Record Label Mettle. Itchy-O got it start as a solo project in 2003 when Scott Banning, a experimental percussionist and filmmaker brought together his art piece while living in Denver. Mixed together with Phagocytosis, Conrad Kehn (vocalist, improvisationalist, and composer from Skull Flux / Kallisti) in 2005 and then with guitarist Nick Lloyd and flemenco guru Rene Heredia in 2006. They composed the film “Whirl” in 2007 and was joined by Kirsten Vermulen with her accordian. They began to play live scores to Scott’s experimental films in 2008 and was joined that year by Bill Englebach and Scot Waknin. They describe themselves now as “Hyper-Intentus~ Electro-Acoustic~ Artifex Voluptus~ Celebratio Professio~ Compello-Fratorum” musical and artistic theatrics experience as one of the world’s only percussion-centered electronic marching bands priding itself on bringing sophicated savage avante-garde music to the people, when and where it is least expected. I for one have to concur, they manifest that destiny to the highest impressive degree. Radio London is a local Rock/Blues/Funk band out of Woodland Park, Colorado. They offer a vintage and hard rock n’ roll blended with Rhythm n’ Blues style and essence that some have compared to Rolling Stones. The bank consists of Joey Walker on drums, Dave Walker as lead vocals and harmonica, Ed Johnson as lead guitar/vocals, Don Derby as rhythm guitar/piano/organ, and Danny Read on bass. They name themselves after the pirate radio station that pumped American rock into London during the 1960s. Pretty decent sound and having seen them rock other stages can be a pretty good stage presence. However, the venue space for the band at the festival was mediocre, creating a difficult arena to absorb or be fully entertained by them at the festival. Not exactly Faerie music, but they were good. It was a bit hard to hear them though.

The pleasure of the German band “Faun” taking the afternoon stage for the final day of Faerieworlds 2010. The weather was perfect, sunny, and warm – the green was littered with faeries old and young, dancing and frolicking to the mystical tunes of Faun. As would expect, Faun was fantastical and enchanting. The audience was ecstatic. Good times were had by all. As we reviewed previously: Faerieworlds 7/31/10; Faerieworlds 8/2/09; Faerieworlds 8/1/09; and Unplugged 2009 (Worms, Germany); Faun consists of Oliver Sa Tyr who does vocals, bosouki, nyckelharpa, celtic harp, and the jews harp; Sandra Elflein who also does vocals, and plays violin; Fiona Rüggeberg also one of the important vocals, blended with her recorders, whistles, bagpipes, and seljefloit; Rüdiger Maul the percussionist brings in the tar, riq, davul, panriqello, darabukka, timba, gaxixi and many other percussion instruments; while Niel Mitra as the only electronic instrument player spices the stage up with his sequencer, sampler, synthesizer, FL Studio, Buzz, Logic Audio, tascam us 224, boss dr 202, Korg Alpha, granular synthesis, folder synthesis, feedbacks, and sounds he has taken from nature and everyday life. Definitely a different experience under the sunlight vs. the darkness of the night making a completely otherworldly tale. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Faun @ Faerieworlds 2010, Bad Faeries Day

One of my longest running favorite bands that I’ve had the pleasure of seeing live in Worms Germany (2009) as well as their North American premiere at Faerieworlds in 2009. I was introduced to them from a DJ Ferret DVD from Hot Topic and the playing of their songs at local goth clubs in Seattle, Vancouver, Denver, and Colorado Springs. Another big draw to Faerieworlds 2010, Faun performed a spectacular encore performance again this year at Faerieworlds mesmerizing the crowds of Faeries, Pirates, and costumed folk at this years festival. The name of the band comes from the Ancient Greek-Roman mythology term for the Deity “Faunus” or “Pan” which is represented as a forested spirit and is why Oliver Pade, one of the main singers, is nicknamed “Satyr” as it is very related to “Faunus”.
Faun is a extremely talented German Pagan Folk / Darkwave band that was formed in 2002 by Oliver “SaTyr” Pade, Elisabeth Pawelke, Fiona Rüggeberg and Birgit Muggenthaler. Faun takes extreme pride and admiration in the use and incorporation of “ancient” & Medieval instruments that they are quite well known for such as the Celtic Harp, Swedish Nyckelharpa, Hurdy Gurdy, Bagpipes, Cittern, Flutes, Drums, and assortment of stringed instruments; merging them with modern inspiration and in some instances, synthesizing. Singing of old tales, epics, and sagas are the heart of their music incorporating their very skilled grasp of many languages they use in their music, including German, Latin, Modern German, Middle High German, Old Icelandic, West Low German, Hungarian, Finnish, Ladino, and Scandinavian. The band is very proudly inspired and dedicated to “nature” bringing back much of the lost Pagan, Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance flavor of high-admiration for nature, mythology, folklore, and woodland spirits/faeries. Historical and folk tunes blended in world music with a folk twist, ranging from melancholic ballads, ancient Perso-Arab melodies, Swedish nyckelharpa, Middle High German lyrics, to exuberant dances like the Brittanic An Dro, and Medieval/Goth club tunes. Faun consists of Oliver Sa Tyr who does vocals, bosouki, nyckelharpa, celtic harp, and the jews harp; Sandra Elflein who also does vocals, and plays violin; Fiona Rüggeberg also one of the important vocals, blended with her recorders, whistles, bagpipes, and seljefloit; Rüdiger Maul the percussionist brings in the tar, riq, davul, panriqello, darabukka, timba, gaxixi and many other percussion instruments; while Niel Mitra as the only electronic instrument player spices the stage up with his sequencer, sampler, synthesizer, FL Studio, Buzz, Logic Audio, tascam us 224, boss dr 202, Korg Alpha, granular synthesis, folder synthesis, feedbacks, and sounds he has taken from nature and everyday life. The Former members as mentioned were Elisabeth Pawelke who sang vocals and played the hurdy gurdy (the instrument of which I believe Sandra Elflein has taken over); and Birgit Muggenthaler who did whistles, bagpipes, shawm, and vocals. Albums produced by this writing: Zaubersprüche (2002); Licht (2004); Lichtbilder (DVD, 2004); Renaissance (2005); Totem (2007); “Ornament” (DVD: 2007); FAUN & The Pagan Folk Festival – Live feat. Sieben & In Gowan Ring (2008); and Unplugged (2009). They have performed at over 450 locations, festivals, concert halls, and churches throughout Europe including but not limited to Mčra Luna Festival (Germany), Elf Fantasy Fair (Netherlands), Wave Gotik Treffen (Germany), Fiesta Celtica Biella (Italy), Zillo Open Air, Folkwoods Folkfestival (Netherlands), Arena van Vletingen (Belgium), Savari Karneval 2005 (Hungary), Palladius/Barcelona (Spain), Estragon (Italy). Between the distributor Curzweyhl / Rough Trade (Germany) and the Label “Noir Records” (USA) they have sold more than 80,000 CDs worldwide. Also their latest studio CD “TOTEM” reached rank 78 of the german (media control) album charts, rank 6 of the german alternativ charts and rank 1 of the german medieval charts. One of my favorite bands, blessing the stages of Faerieworlds once again, and thereby throwing me into non-stop dancing and bouncing throughout the concert. Delhi 2 Dublin is an India – Irish modern fusion band bringing together the traditional music of Ireland with that of North India (specifically Bhangra). As in 2009, Delhi 2 Dublin had the Faerieworlds audiences stomping, bouncing, bobbing, dancing, whirling, and frolicking. Based from Vancouver, British Columbia, Delhi 2 Dublin consists of 5 musicians who mix up electronica and world music, heaavy on the Bhangra, Celtic, Indian, and Dub influences. They utilize the tabla, fiddle, dhol, punjabi vocals, and electric sitar with amazing electronic beats, global sounds, and synchronicities. They were formed for a one-time performance at Vancouver’s Celtic Fest in 2006 and instantly became famous – their music took a life of its own. They went on tour of Eastern Canada and California playing a number of festivals including Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Shambhala, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues, etc. Their debut album spread throughout North America, Japan, and Eastern Europe. They played Canada Day’s large celebration on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on July 1, 2007. The band consists of Tarun Nayer (Tabla, electronics); Kytami (Fiddle); Sanjay Seran (vocals); Andrew Kim (Electric Sitar, Guitar); and Ravi Binning (Dhol, Tabla). A must see. On to the stage at Faerieworlds all the way from New York came a duo of Gypsy Nomads who shook the stage with a mix of cabaret, celtic, and neo-medieval flavored music meshed with folk, punk, and as they say in their bio – “the vineyards of southern France and the spirit of gypsy sound”. One of my favorite gypsy bands, this team will never disappoint. A definite blessing to the Faerieworlds festival. The duo consist of Samantha Stephenson who through bilingual vocals as being a French-born British chanteuse mesmerizes her audieces with her voice, percussion, lyrics, and drums. Matched in charm with Scott Helland who was quite popular in the punk scene merging in guitar, drums, and guitar loops. This duette whirlwinded together are a lively pair honoring the free spirit lifestyle with adlib juju, theatrics, and enchantment. An absolute pleasure to the eyes and ears. They boast of their wide array of musical styles from the sultry and cheeky French/English songs to Gypsy celtic inspired instrumentals to pounding drums reminiscent of Taiko and march-style choreography as they describe themselves on their website. They’ve hit over 175,000 miles of touring across the United States and Canada over the last five years. They’ve been licensed for Indie films and TV shows, including Oprah Winfrey show and WE TV’s Gothic Wedding show. They’ve made appearances at Philadelphia’s Trocadero Theater, NY’s Brushwoods Center, St Louis’ Focal Point Folk Theater, and INATS Trade Show in Florida and Colorado. They’ve also been on stage with Voltaire, Gandalf Murphy, Candice Night, Incendio, Dragon Ritual Drummers, Ego Likeness, Wendy Rule, Brian Viglione and the White Elephant Burlesque, Lunar Fire as well as amazing belly dance troupes across the U.S. Always enchanting. 5 stars out of 5.

Another year the infamous pirates and scoundrels of “Man Overboard” hit the stage at Faerieworlds delivering a stunning performance. Man Overboard is an Oregon based band that meshes pirate music of the 1600-1800’s, with medieval song, nautical battle hymns, mixed with some modern genre punk. Everytime they hit stage the enamored audience Parties like its 1699. The band takes alot of influeces from the Dropkick Murphys, Luke Kelly, The Real McKenzies, Oscar Brand, The Pogues, Flogging Molly, and Tommy Maken and the Clancy Brothers. The pirates onboard the ship are Alika Inocencio as the Captain with lead and backup vocals, mandolin, guitar, tin whistle, recorder, and bodhran; The First Mate Johny Kyllingstad with lead/backup vocals, flute, tin whistle, winds, guitar, and wrecking crew; The Quartermaster Chris Leland as Lead Guitar, Tin Whistle, Bazouki, Mandolin, vocals, and Heathen-runt; Joel Kenny the Coxwain with bodhran, whiskey, vocals, and the dungeon master; Jake Beckwith as a gunner shooting lead and backup vocals, fiddle, and smokin rosin; The Navigator C Bass with bass, vocals, and shrek humor; Kimmy Smith – their Wendy Bird – with magic/summoning, fiddle, guitar, and vocals; Graeme the Deck Hand doing tin whistle fury; and finally Mark Mullaney the Warpipes and Morale of the crew with bagpipes, small piles, and highland pipes. Bad Faeries Day is traditionally one of the most happening days at Faerieworlds. It is the day when the fae let go and welcome the mischief, the naughty, the friskyness, and fully enjoy the party. A time of shadows, of mystery, of hidden things. Occuring on the second day of the festival, its also the time when the party peaks, friends have re-acquainted, new friends made, and everyone is settled into camp – unlike Day 1 when everyone is tired from setting up camp or a weary road trip, or day three when they are packing up and preparing to return to the mortal realm. Bad Faeries Day is the day to let loose. Now with Faerieworlds having 24 hour activities onwards even through the wee-hours of the night, it is the time to completely unwind, celebrate, and frolick. My personal experience with this day was filled with photo shoots in the woods, swimming naked in the river, frolicking in the fields, dancing non-stop to the most excellent tunes of Man Overboard, Gypsy Nomads, Talesma, Delhi 2 Dublin, Faun, and a dark Bad Faeries Night Ritual: “When Darkness Falls”, more Tricky Pixie rocking us into the week hours of the night, and acrobatics, fire spinning, poi, and performance art. Fire side music jam sessions, partyings, and festive campfire enjoyment. This Bad Faeries Day was the best ever. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

The amazing inspiration and co-creators behind the world-famous Faerieworlds festival, the Band Woodland has weaved a living myth in the Pacific Northwest. Straight out of a faerie tale, Woodland brings together enchanting rhythmns, otherworldly music, inspirational lyrics, and mesmerizing ambiance. They are truly a Faerie Band straight out of Faerieland. As they performed opening night of their 2010 Faerieworlds, the gates between the worlds were seen and the mystical appeared. They blend together myth, faerie tale, Celtic and bardic poetry, folk and electric instrumentation into rock. The band is composed of amazing talent that is always worthy of grand applause. Emilio Miller-Lopez (harmony vocals, guitar, songwriter); Kelly Miller-Lopez (lead vocals, harp, whistles, flute, percussion, doumbek, dance); Kimmy Smith (plays a damn mean and enchanting fiddle and violin); Donald Brodsky (bass and didjeridoo); Markus Johnson (percussion/electronics, Udu, Talking Drum, Bells, Shakers, Electronica); and Ken Sokolov (drums/percussion, Tabla, Doumbek, Djembe). Bestowed with visuals of artwork by Brian Froud, their stage performance is no better described than otherworldly. The melding of their clan of performers and talent makes an unbeatable mix that will stun and rock any audience. Always a favorite. Rating: 5 stars out of 5. A very intriguing American psychedelic electro-tribal rock band out of Maryland, Telesma pounded and tranced the fae on day 2 of Faerieworlds 2010. They played Faerieworlds in 2009 and came back for a repeat performance. Talesma brings together modern and tribal instrumentation with fusion of the primitive with the futuristic. Amazing drumming, primal beating, exotic music, and sensational dancing – Talesma blends the stage with the dancefloor. Didgeridoos, kubing, tribal drums, modern instruments, and mesmerizing vocals they create a indigenous form of polyrhyhmic rock and roll. Their lyrics has a mythological message. They have two full length albums “O(h)M” and “Hearing Visions: Live” that they produce on their independent lable “Strangely Compelling Music”. The bodypainted Ian Hesford (didgeridoo, kubing, dumbek, djun-djun, throat singing) stunned the stage; melded with the sounds of Jason Sage (keyboards, percussion, programmer, lyrics); Joanne Juskus (vocals, percussion, karatalas); Chris Mandra (guitar, analog guitar synth, his unique manDrum, and vocals); and Bryan Jones “Jonesy” (6 string MIDI & upright basses, theremin, percussion); Rob Houck (drum kit, percussion, electronic drums). Spiritual walkers between the worlds, these shamans know how to rock the worlds. Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

An awesome Celtic mongrel rock band from Australia … Brother had the Fae spinning crazily on the main stage opening night of Faerieworlds 2010. Brother incorporates bagpipes, didgeridoo, vocals, and mashes Celtic and Australian rock to a unique sound of their very own. The band consists of the Richardson brothers – Hamish, Angus, and Fergus who grew up together in Bathurst while attending the Scots School. They started their band in 1992 touring pubs in Sydney Australia. They record on their own record label called Rhubarb Records having released their first album “Black and White” and then “2000’s THis Way Up”. Fergus left the band in 1996 for filmmaking and now resides in Arizona operating a boutique with his wife. Hamish left in March of 2007 and moved to New South Wales. Angus moved to Los Angeles. Today they primarily play in the United States and take numerous tours around North America, Japan, France, Egypt, and Australia. The Brothers consist of the sounds of Angus, Dalbo, and Drew today. An amazing combination who certainly contributed to the gates opening to Faerieworlds. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

One of the Pacific Northwest’s most whimsical and mischievious of musical trios that bring comedy and mayhem to Faerieworlds every year. They were birthed from the very root of Faerieworlds. The Guitarist and Vocalist S.J. Tucker, matching wits with Fiddler/Mandolin and Bodhran player Alexander James Adams, trying to keep up with the beautiful Pixie celloist/Bodhran player Betsy Tinney – this threesome definitely enchants and brings smiles to its captives. They formed their triad at Faerieworlds 2006. As some have billed them “Gypsy Celtic Folk Rock for Naughty Punk Faeries” they certainly live up to that label as they perform, joke, dance, and prance on stage. They are true pixies and sprites of elvish delight! Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Punk Rock Flea Market – 4/24/10 – Pueblo, Colorado

From noon until about midnight, a host of talent as well as arts/crafts/collectibles/shirts/candles/and punk rock oriented gifts were presented to Pueblo’s alternative culture for a fundraiser held to get supplies and gear for Pueblo’s first May Day Celebration to be held May Day weekend. The Benefit brought together talent from Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and beyond. Tables were offered at an affordable $7 which included entrance to the show. Inbetween the shows, Nick and Chris from the ‘The Nicotine Fits’ were spinning records. The stage was blessed by the Conjugal Visits (members of the Nicotine Fits), M.D., Sonic Vomit, the Naked Bowlers, Katey Sleeveless, Inaiah Lujan, Made Up Minds, One51, The Good Morning Accordian Terrorist from Colorado Springs, Grace Champe, Brain Distortion, The Asssault Shakers, and many others. The Fundraiser was to raise money for the local artistic and musical communitie’s celebration of May Day – which they see as for the “International Worker’s Day of May Day” as well as the pre-Christian holiday of Beltane for rebirth and fertility. Overall as a nineteenth century working class struggle to gain the 8-hour work day when working conditions at the time were severe and common for a 10-16 hour day in unsafe conditions. From the National convention held in Chicago, 1884 – it was decreed that “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s labor from and after May 1, 1886″. It was also from here that anarchist proclamations were printed appealed to the working class ”
•Workingmen to Arms! •War to the Palace, Peace to the Cottage, and Death to LUXURIOUS IDLENESS. •The wage system is the only cause of the World’s misery. It is supported by the rich classes, and to destroy it, they must be either made to work or DIE. •One pound of DYNAMITE is better than a bushel of BALLOTS! •MAKE YOUR DEMAND FOR EIGHT HOURS with weapons in your hands to meet the capitalistic bloodhounds, police, and militia in proper manner. Not surprisingly the entire city was prepared for mass bloodshed, reminiscent of the railroad strike a decade earlier when police and soldiers gunned down hundreds of striking workers.” It was on May 1, 1886, more than 300,000 workers in 13,000 businesses across the United States walked off their jobs in the first May Day celebration in history for this purpose. In Chicago, the epicenter for the 8-hour day agitators, 40,000 went out on strike with the anarchists in the forefront of the public’s eye. With their fiery speeches and revolutionary ideology of direct action, anarchists and anarchism became respected and embraced by the working people and despised by the capitalists. To celebrate this important step in American history – the local community will bring together a celebration to honor those who stood up for their righs on this day, even though they were met with police harrassment, beatings, lock-outs, and riots. From these riots – eight anarchists rose above the rest – Albert Parsons, August Spies, Samuel Fielden, Oscar Neebe, Michael Schwab, George Engel, Adolph Fischer and Louis Lingg – who were arrested and convicted of murder, though only three were even present at Haymarket and those three were in full view of all when the bombing occurred. The jury in their trial was comprised of business leaders in a gross mockery of justice similar to the Sacco-Vanzetti case thirty years later, or the trials of AIM and Black Panther members in the seventies. The entire world watched as these eight organizers were convicted, not for their actions, of which all of were innocent, but for their political and social beliefs. On November 11, 1887, after many failed appeals, Parsons, Spies, Engel and Fisher were hung to death. Louis Lingg, in his final protest of the state’s claim of authority and punishment, took his own life the night before with an explosive device in his mouth. Today we see tens of thousands of activists embracing the ideals of the Haymarket Martyrs and those who established May Day as an International Workers’ Day. This is why they will celebrate May Day. The Event had quite a good crowd in attention through the day and evening, with a next-to-free potluck smorgasboard of delicious food and plethera of entertainment. The bands were great and fun was had by all.

While I’m not a big fan of the Black Sheep as a venue (too small, too grungy, the sound is often messed up, and other items too numerous to mention here) – I was very pleased with this show, the performers, and the crowd. It’s simply a rarity that VNV Nation will hit a small town like Colorado Springs, especially at the affordable rate of $15.00. The big additional plus is to be able to see Revolution State open up for VNV – which was like icing on the cake. System Syn was great too – so a three-spice addition to the night. VNV of course was amazing as I’ve always seen them be (but wasn’t one of their best shows as the venue wasn’t complimentary to their greatness). A spectacular time was had by all – combining the venue with each of the performers I give the overall concert experience a … 4 stars our of 5. [note – I’ve been to several shows at the Black Sheep [venue rates 2.5 out of 5], I’ve seen System Syn three times – this was an o.k. show for them [rates 4 out of 5], this was a first time for Revolution State – great first impression! [rates 4.5 out of 5 stars] and VNV I’ve seen around the world – six times – this wasn’t their best [rates 4 stars out of 5].

A Colorado Springs talented duet – Ben and Bonnie P. brings to stage an amazing act of electrifying Industrial/Electro/Tech/IDM Beats. Analogue laden Electro-Noise that brings forth another world – A Revolution State – where modern technology meets vintage instrumentation harmonized to save the Earth. They began in 2000 focused on a philosophy with music and sound to bring it to life. In 2003 they added to songs to the Velvet Acid Christ album ‘Hex Angel’; Utopia Dystopia ‘Misery’ and ‘Eva’. In 2005 They brought to life a live act called “Noizekatt” and released their first LP called “Revolution State” vs. “Noizekatt”. In 2006 two of their remixes were contributed to Velvet Acid Christ’s ‘Wound’ and ‘Ghost Regen’ as well as an ethereal dance remix of ‘Demon Breeder’ to Neikka RPM’s ‘Rise of the 13th Serpent’. An amazing night following the Good Faeries Night at the 2010 Winter Celebration of Faerieworlds was the notorious “Bad Faeries Night”. For this celebration, it was by far my favorite of the activities spun for the three day event. The doors to Faerieworlds opened up around 7:30 pm, with several merchants in the hall hawking their steampunk and faerie wares; costumes galore with steampunk influence, and kids dancing in the theater awaiting the amazing acts. Blossomed forth from the infamously successful Summer Faerie Festival extravaganza – Faerieworlds – comes a rather new evolution of their festival – The Winter Celebration. Hosted indoors similar to a “Con” rather than a “Festival” – partakers of the merriment gathered together to celebrate Imbolc and the season of Winter with concerts at the McDonald Theater and a marketplace during the day with workshops, activities, and performances at the Lane Events Center in radical Eugene, Oregon. The second night of the event was the “Bad Faeries Masquerade Ball” held exclusively in the McDonald Theater. The Steampunk costumes were amazing. Adam Hurst did a fantastic performance warming up the stage afterwhich was taken over by Seattle’s Steampunk band “Abney Park“. Then Kelly and her bellydance troupe did an Amazing Dryad Imbolc Rite with mesmerizing tree spirits dancing in the moonlight. The evening was concluded with the ethereal and stunning performance of Zoe Jakes and Beats Antique. Simply Amazing Evening. Of course it ended too soon … just after midnight … but all good things must come to an end. I’ve always been a fan from of Abney Park’s music, but this was an absolute pleasure to see them live, especially at Faerieworlds where the Faeries and otherworldly folk seasoned their outfits Steampunk style. The audience was absolutely rocketted and propelled with intense energy. A Seattle based band – Abney Park to many is the definition of “Steampunk” music. They since about Steampunk culture – about “A time that we wish had bee, a time where airships waged war in the skies, and corsets and cummerbunds were proper adventuring attire”. They definitely have a unique decorative style and influence. I was quite impressed. A goth/industrial band that resides in Seattle, Washington enchanting their audiences for over 12 years. They portray Steampunk airship pirates as crew members of the HMS Ophelia, a British Navy Zeppelin rampaging the skies in the fictional worlds influenced by time travel, Jules Vern, and the Victorian age. The band is not only flavored by Steampunk and Techno-Time travelling pirate and gypsy dress, belly dancers, and astounding outfits but armed with post-apocalyptic clockwork guitars, swashbuckling flintlock bass, middleastern instruments, violins, and Tesla powered keyboards. The Band consists of Robert “Dread Captain Robert” Brown who does lead vocals and songwriting playing the darbuka, diatonic button accordian, jembe, harmonica, and other instruments; teamed with Kristina “Angel” Erickson also on vocals, with navigation, keyboards, and flair; Daniel C on bass and pocket guitar; Jody Ellen on vocals; and Nathaniel “Two Sheds” Johnstone on guitar, violin, mandolin, bouzouki, and other such instruments. This band is absolutely fabulous and multi-talented. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Growing very rapidly to be one of my favorite dubstep/fusion/beat bands, from my pseudo-home city of Vancouver, B.C. Delhi 2 Dublin is sure to entice its audiences into a frenzy … and the friday night of January 29th proved that description completely. The Faerieworlds Winter Celebration patrons were ecstatically dancing to the Bollywood/India/Irish/Celtic fusion band known as “Delhi 2 Dublin”. Their name says its all. Five incredibly talented musicians and artists blending and fusing the Bhangra, tabla, celtic fiddle, dhol, Punjabi vocals, electronic sitar, Celtic, Dub, electronica, and world music together that are fantastically dance-able tunes. They were formed for a one-time performance at Vancouver’s Celtic Fest in 2006 and instantly became famous – their music took a life of its own. They went on tour of Eastern Canada and California playing a number of festivals including Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Shambhala, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues, etc. Their debut album spread throughout North America, Japan, and Eastern Europe. They played Canada Day’s large celebration on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on July 1, 2007. The band consists of Tarun Nayer (Tabla, electronics); Kytami (Fiddle); Sanjay Seran (vocals); Andrew Kim (Electric Sitar, Guitar); and Ravi Binning (Dhol, Tabla). Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Woodland @ the Faerieworlds Winter “Good Faeries Masquerade” Ball – 1/29/10

One of my favorite Pagan/Faerie bands, Woodland is the mover/shakers behind the phenomena that is Faerieworlds. Highlighting the first night of the Good Faeries Masquerade Ball at the McDonald Theater that was part of Faerieworlds Winter Celebration 2010 brought to their audiences a stunning performance. Woodland played their ball from 9:00 – 10:30 pm. Woodland focuses around Earth based and Faerie themes in their music, with Celtic and bardic poetry as strong influences … they mix folk and electric instrumentation melded with improvisational festival rock music. The Chief songwriter, Emilio Miller-Lopez is harmony vocals, guitar; Kelly Miller-Lopez as lead vocals, harp, flute, percussion; Kimmy Smith on fiddle; Donald Brodsky plays bass and didjeridoo; while Markus Johnson is on percussion/electronics; and Ken Sokolov on drums/percussion. The band makes up a ecstatic group that has quite a local and international following. Often their music is accompanied by VJ imagery based on Brian Froud’s artwork. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Somehow I didn’t come to expect that I’d be blessed and lucky enough to see my favorite band twice at this festival. This time, for the finale for Faerieworlds, they played in the daylight as evening was just arriving on Sunday August 2, during family faerie day. An amazing spiral dance was danced to them. So very empowering. I have never been more mesmerized and enchanted by a musical ensemble before until my experiences with “Faun”. The name of the band comes from the Ancient Greek-Roman mythology term for the Deity “Faunus” or “Pan” which is represented as a forested spirit and is why Oliver Pade, one of the main singers, is nicknamed “Satyr” as it is very related to “Faunus”. Faun is a extremely talented German Pagan Folk / Darkwave band that was formed in 2002 by Oliver “SaTyr” Pade, Elisabeth Pawelke, Fiona Rüggeberg and Birgit Muggenthaler. The same year they released their first album “Zaubersprüche” which included the guest musician Niel Mitra who later joined the band as the only member playing electronic instruments. They were joined by percussionist Rüdiger Maul in 2004 replacing Birgit who joined the folk-rock band “Schandmaul”. They lost Elisabeth Pawelke in 2008 as she went to focus her studies in classical song in Basel, Switzerland and was succeeded by Sandra Elflein. Faun takes extreme pride and admiration in the use and incorporation of “ancient” & Medieval instruments that they are quite well known for such as the Celtic Harp, Swedish Nyckelharpa, Hurdy Gurdy, Bagpipes, Cittern, Flutes, Drums, and assortment of stringed instruments; merging them with modern inspiration and in some instances, synthesizing. Singing of old tales, epics, and sagas are the heart of their music incorporating their very skilled grasp of many languages they use in their music, including German, Latin, Modern German, Middle High German, Old Icelandic, West Low German, Hungarian, Finnish, Ladino, and Scandinavian. The band is very proudly inspired and dedicated to “nature” bringing back much of the lost Pagan, Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance flavor of high-admiration for nature, mythology, folklore, and woodland spirits/faeries. Oliver Pade said at the 2004 Summer Darkness festival in Utrecht, Netherlands “We don’t know ourselves what kind of music we play, so we call it paganfolk”. Historical and folk tunes blended in world music with a folk twist, ranging from melancholic ballads, ancient Perso-Arab melodies, Swedish nyckelharpa, Middle High German lyrics, to exuberant dances like the Brittanic An Dro, and Medieval/Goth club tunes.

Another amazing performance of Woodland at their home fest. I much more enjoyed this performance than friday’s … not sure why, but amazed and enchanted on both days. To have them open for Faun and to transition the amazing performances from one favorite band to another was extroadinary and made my day. The kindred spirits of Faerieworlds in their amazing band named “Woodland” whom supernaturally crafts Celtic-inspired Faerie/Pagan trance-rock. Woodland was also founded by Faerieworlds producers/founders Kelly and Emilio Miller-Lopez. Woodland consists of Kelly Miller-Lopez (songwriter; lead vocalist; harp; flutes; percussion; and dance ), Emilio Miller-Lopez (songwriter; guitar; harmony vocals ), Kimmy Smith (Fiddler; traditional reel n’ jig arrangements), Donald Brodsky (bass, didjeridu, electric rhythmn), and reknown Cirque Du Soleil/Trillian Green fame Jarrod Kaplan (drummer/percussionist) . Always a prime feature of Faerieworlds who weave the magic that is the festival and the community. Woodland is most notorious for their album “Twilight” featuring enchanting and magical music about the Faerie realm. One of my all time favorite Pagan and Faerie bands, Woodland enchants all of their listeners. Listening to their music easily transports you to the Faerie realms, displaying the mystery and the beauty of the paradise that is Faerie. Mesmerizing mythic harmonies of the amazing husband and wife team Kelly and Emilio teamed together with Kimmy Smith’s sensational fiddling and jig, merged with Donald Brodsky’s electric rhytmn and didjeridu to the beat of Jarrod Kaplan’s trance inducing percussion makes this a ensemble that not only mesmerizes but ecstatically pleases its audiences, and has being doing so for over 9 years throughout the United States and Europe. Artistic backdrop and inspiration from reknown Faerie artists Brian and Wendy Froud (The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Star Wars) – together they have brought illumination to the world in the vision of Faerie. Co-founders of the production company “Imaginosis” brought to vision and fruition what we known of “Faerieworlds” today as well as it’s spin-offs of Faeriecon, Masquerade balls, and celebrations. Their performances are a living legend on the stage, with art, style, mystery, enchantment, and ritual merged with their music and art. The band naturally attracts all the woodland inhabitants and faeries from every little shadow of the forest to come play, dance, and frolick. Just like this evening performance, Woodland loves to share the stage and has done so with Faun, Qntal, Solas, Johnny Cunningham, Priscilla Hernandez, Susan McKeown, Trillian Green, Rasputina, Brother, Casey Neill, Phil Cunningham, Kevin Burke and many others. They are currently producing “Seasons in Elfland” as a 2-part compilation being released at FaerieCon 2009 (Part 1) and Faerieworlds 2010 (Part 2). I cannot more strongly recommend catching their performance, events, or festivals whenever possible. Kudos and many thanks to you all for the fantastic art, music, and work you do for us all. Faerie tales and mythic stories in poetic song in a faerie folk-Celtic influence and style in her presentation. Louisa John-Krol, came as a guest from Australia to the Faerieworlds festival for her first American Faerieworlds performance joined by Kelly Miller-Lopez with her harp and dancing, mesmerizing an audience with eager ears for her bardic flair. She is the main artist of the Prikosnovénie label in France, she is often described as a “musician fairy” to which I can only agree. She is influenced by Kate Bush, Dead Can Dance and Loreena McKennitt. Her musical enchantment mixed with Kelly’s flair brought to the festival on spectacular and mesmerizing show. I’m becoming quite a fan of her music. Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.(read my review of her at Trolls et Legendes).

I had heard of Delhi 2 Dublin and rave reviews of their music. But I never “heard” them. What a sensational band! The Irish fusion with Indian hop really made me want to dance. Delhi 2 Dublin creates a fusion of music from Ireland with that of North India (specifically Bhangra). This was their very first premiere Faerieworlds performance. They really had the audience grounds stomping, dancing, whirling, and frolicking. Based from Vancouver, British Columbia, Delhi 2 Dublin consists of 5 musicians who mix up electronica and world music, heaavy on the Bhangra, Celtic, Indian, and Dub influences. They utilize the tabla, fiddle, dhol, punjabi vocals, and electric sitar with amazing electronic beats, global sounds, and synchronicities. They were formed for a one-time performance at Vancouver’s Celtic Fest in 2006 and instantly became famous – their music took a life of its own. Tricky Pixie is an amazing Faerie trio that came to be because of Faerieworlds. S.J. Tucker (guitar/vocals), Alexander James Adams (fiddle/mandolin/bodhran), and Betsy Tinney (cello/bodhran) formed their musical triad at Faerieworlds 2006. On July 31st, 2009 they took the main stage with mesmerizing bouncy and trickster beats to coincide with the release of their first studio album “Mythcreants”. Billed as “Gypsy Celtic Folk Rock for Naughty Punk Faeries” they fully live up to their name and embodie that spirit in stage presence, music, lyrics, and ambience. These three mischievious pixies mesh together various instruments of strings and drums with enchanting festive lyrics and voice. Amazing songwriters who create their own stuff, they also bring out the classics of original tunes. While a pretty new Faerie band … their first official show was in Redmond, Washington (July 2007) and they’ve been stomping the stages with some fantastical beats with an animated performance throughout the Pacific Northwest. Definitely some top talent to keep an eye on as spin out their Faerie melodies. I enjoyed the Saturday performance for some reason better than yesterday’s … perhaps because the Faerie spirit was definitely flowing by this time at the festival. Amazing band! Kudos! Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5.

Faerieworlds 2009: Day 1 – Good Faeries (7/31/09)

We arrived late morning in enough time to register and set up camp before the larger crowds came rambling in, though there were already a plethera of attendees. The gates to the realms was opened at 2 pm. The Main stage brought the amazing performances of the Wicker Men (2:30-3:15 pm); an Opening Ceremony and Spiral Dance (3:30-4:00 pm); Tricky Pixie (4:15-5:00 pm); Gaia Consort (5:45-6:45 pm); Beats Antique with Zoe Jakes (7:30-8:45 pm); Woodland with Adam Hurst and Louisa John-Krol (9:30-11 pm); and the Summoning of the Fae/Howling at the Moon by the Mythmakers (11:30-midnight). Mark Lewis, one of the emcees told stories and led a storytelling workshop. On the Village stage throughout the day starred Gypsy Moon at 5 pm and Ghillie Dhu at 6:45 pm. As usual the vending village was full of arts, crafts, costumes, clothing, artwork, wings, ears, talent, cuisine, and artists. Highlighted this year was of course Brian/Wendy/Toby Froud, Amy Brown, J. Corsentino, Jen Delyth, Gris Grimly, Miss Mindy, and Carolyn Turgeon. The theme of the day was “Good Faeries” styled after Brian Froud’s book “Good Faeries, Bad Faeries”. So most peoples costumery were along that theme. The opening ceremony was nicely done with a pretty empowering spiral dance afterwards. The first performers were the Wicker Men who got the green stomping. Tricky Pixie enchanted the audience into mischievious frolick, followed by Gaia Consort who brought tribute to the Earth with their otherworldly tunes. We were then mesmerized by Beats Antique with bellydancer Zoe Jakes which was the highlight during the daylight; followed by legendary Woodland who were guested with the talents of Louisa John-Krol (Australia) and cellist Adam Hurst. As darkness took over out came the fire dancers/spinners and a getting into the faerie state rite performance by the Mythmakers who all highlighted night-time. Unfortunately since I hurt my foot earlier in the day, I was unable to dance the day and night away. But I was still enchanted hanging in the spectator zone praying that my foot would be better tomorrow as one should not miss even an hour of dancing to the amazing talents that Faerieworlds brings in. Regardless of the 94+ degree heat, there were water faeries throughout the dancing crowds spritzing and cooling off the attendees … that was a mighty nice addition. Day 1 official entertainment lasted until midnight, after which the attendees were guided out of the village and closed its gates. However, that was not the end of the activities for the night. Back at the Party camping area, revellers shared spiritual songs, dance, drumming, didgeridoo, glow-stick poi spinning, hanging out, and festivity with one another around the hearth that should have held a fire, but rather was only filled with glow-sticks since no fire seemed to be permitted. A fire would have kept the party going all night, and some did stay up to the rising of the sun, while others wandered back to their tents at an early hour. Apparently however, there were festivities and entertainment going on back at the village in the casbah teahouse tent; and unknown to many of the campers, some of the food vendors still were serving after-hours. The program guides were severely delayed in distribution as we didn’t get ours until the next day. (Guides were not ready when the gates were opened) Overall, it was a nice chill day of settling into the Faerie realm, setting up camp, catching up with old friends I hadn’t seen for ages, and figuring out what I wanted to get out of the festival this weekend. Tapping the Faerie energy and being charged with the blessings weaved by the Mythmakers, the spirit of Faerieworlds was invoked. Rating: 4 stars out of 5. Official Faerieworlds Gallery
