Widow’s Bane @ Brethrencon 2010

Widow’s Bane at Brethrencon 2010
* Saturday, 18 September 2010 Performance * Brethrencon 2010 * Denver Airport Marriott * 16455 E. 40th Circle * Aurora / Denver, Colorado * http://www.myspace.com/widowsbane * facebook *
Rocking the banquet hall, direct from the grave, as the risen dead came “Widow’s Bane”, a motley crew of zombies en-trancing their victims at Brethrencon this year. Colorado’s infamous zombie band, The Widow’s Bane has folk, gothic, and roots music and comes from Boulder, Colorado. They also describe themselves as “Zombie Death Polka”. They claim a fantastical origin “shortly after being poisoned to death by his wife, Governor Mortimer Leech was recruited by the Dark Lord himself to join the house band upon his ship, The Widow’s Bane. The crew exclusively consisted of men fallen at the hands of their beloveds, and it was there that Leech was introduced to the rest of the band. There was Rutherford Belleview, an accomplished accordionist hailing from Connecticut, whose wife hung him up to dry with a piano wire. Bartholomew Catacombs, lovingly refered to as “Bat”, had been buried alive. A hundred years later The Devil dug him up, and he was now holding down the low end of the band on board The Widow’s Bane. Franklin McKane, a drunken gambler of the potato famine era, had been shot to death by his blushing bride when she realized his banjo and deck of cards meant more to him than she ever would. And then there was Rictus Corpum, who met the sharp end of a scythe after his wife played him out for another man. The Devil, however, was kind enough to transform Corpum’s bride into a violin so he might exact his revenge by playing her daily for all eternity. The ghastly band consists of Mortimer Leech, Rutherford Belleview, Rictus Corpum, Franklin McKane, and Bat Catacombs. Gruesome and upbeat, this band knows how to please their audience. Good rhthymn and dance beat. Great performance that gave Brethrencon a good time by all. Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5.

2009 Boulder SolFest

Boulder SolFest 2009
http://www.bouldersolfest.com/ * SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 2009 * Double Rainbow Ranch * 6541 N 63rd St, Niwot, Colorado * 4-11pm, $12 *
This year I decided to try out the Boulder SolFest at the Double Rainbow Ranch. At first, arriving into someone’s backyard with only a few people around shortly after gates opened originally concerned me that no one was going to show up even though they had billed some great local talent. But as the clock ticked along, a good crowd showed up. They also had some local natural art/products vendor tables, and once the fear of rain dismissed, the talent took to the stage to provide a wonderful show that led to a brilliant Summer Solstice fire ceremony ritual and fire dancing. Pretty spectacular, home-feel community and connectivity. Lil Sum’N Sum’N with Tierro and Gilly from Kan’nal, Ariana Saraha, the Mountain Trance Medicine Band, and Shaela Noella mesmerized the comfy crowd with some wonderful music for the welcoming of Summer and the celebration of Father’s Day. I was quite pleased and thought the event went very well. I couldn’t stay to the bitter end as I had work back in Colorado Springs the next morning, but was very fulfilled with the beauty shared with us. Thank you! Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5.

Lil Sum’n Sum’n * http://www.myspace.com/lilsumnsumn
A artistic music project from members of Lunar Fire and Kan’nal that is composed of Lisa Wimberger, Tierro, and Gil Gonzalez blesses its audiences with improvisational psy-trance world beat haung drums, tablas, doumbeks, dounouns, congas, shakers, udas, guitars, drones, ballaphones, with tap dancing blending rhythmns and music from afro-cuban, african, middle eastern, and American influences. Simply amazing trio.

Mountain Trance Medicine Band * www.myspace.com/mountaintrance
The main act for the SolFest 2009 I attended as it was held at their ranch. I’ve been seeing quite a bit of this band lately and impressed with their music. Regressive TechnoBilly Bluegrass Funk. They bring together the banjo, drum, didjeridoo, and other traditional instruments influenced by the old claw-hammer dance tunes merging tribal beats of modal mountain melodies to trancy grooves, sanskrit ragas, and bluegrass harmonies. Very dance-able stuff. Mountain Trance is made up of Paul Temple, Hal Landem, Michael Krow, Jessee Layton, Damian Leuthold, and JVonD. Great performance and magic! Thank you!

Ariana Saraha * www.arianasaraha.com
Another great performer I’ve seen a bit of lately mesmerizing her audience with Middle East, Far East, Celtic and Flamenco flavored world beats blending together traditional with a natural soulful funk. Amazing rhythmns and vocals that inspires environmental healing through music. Very inspirational. Thank you Ariana!

Shaela Noella * www.myspace.com/shaelanoella
An amazing enchantress from Hawaii, Shaela Noella brought to SolFest spiritually strengthening and blessing acoustic songs to her audience. She was an amazing presence that made my Summer Solstice blessed. Thank you.

Mountain Trance Medicine Band (6/20/09)

Mountain Trance Medicine Band

June 20th, 2009 show at the Mishawaka Amphitheater by Fort Collins, Colorado
Regressive TechnoBilly BlueGrass Funk band with some psychedelic twists are words easy to sum up these great performers. Local Colorado’ians, this wonderful group of talented musicians will inspire and mesmerize their audiences. Bringing together the drum, banjo, fiddle, and the old claw-hammer dance tunes they merge with techno-tribal beats creates a whole different sort of rhythmn that will make you bounce between a barn dance and a rave. Amazing concepts and great music. Enjoyed their performance this very evening. Great job! Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5.

Big John Bates & the Voodoo Dolls (4/22/09 – Denver)

Big John Bates

From Vancouver, British Columbia

~ BANGTOWN 2009 WORLD TOUR ~
Performance in Denver, Colorado at the Three Kings Tavern * 60 S Broadway * Denver, CO 80209 *

Night two and the finale of Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dolls in Colorado on tour this year with their 4th CD – 2009 release of “Bangtown”. Whizzing through their six weeks & 34 shows across the USA, as I write this review they are flying to Europe for five weeks through Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria & Hungary. Last night’s gig in Pueblo, Colorado was spectacular, and the Denver performance Stunning. Next for them off to Salt Lake City tomorrow. Its a great loss with the closure of this tour as the amazing sCare-oline will be parting from the band and becoming replaced by Brandy Battery. One of my most favorite bands of their genre, Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dolls are NOT to be missed for any reason – those who do miss out on a truly enchanting and risque life experience. Following the Voodoo Organist in Denver at the incredible Three Kings Tavern, the band and burlesque team enchanted their audience and threw them into a frenzy. Big John Bates is a merge of Rock-a-billy, Psycho-billy, dark rock n’ roll, with a twist of sounds like “The Stray Cats” and “White Stripes” with a sense of rhythm you can really dance to. Accompanied by the beautiful troupe of Voodoo dolls, with Whiskey Rose and Tristan who mesmerized the stage after every other song with a tantalizing burlesque performance – naughty nurses pouring “their medicine” to unsuspecting captives from the audience, tribal tiki dancing, and costuming. Unfortunately Three Kings did not permit the fire spinning and quenched their flames. Regardless, the tour definitely lives to its Name of “Bangtown”. Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dolls are world-famous with great popularity in the entertainment industry. In 2002 they performed at the Winter Olympics and was picked up by El Toro Records in Spain, also headlined the Mandalay Bay House of Blues in Las Vegas for its infamous 2002 Hellbilly Halloween; in 2005 they started by receiving first Canadian Jagermeister band endorsement and around the same tour year signed with Germany’s Wolverine Records, and in 2006 they saw their music and performance headlined in Vancouver’s International Burlesque Festival & the Voodoo Ball; and their music played on season 3, episode 1 of Battlestar Galactica; andfeatured at the 2008 Ink & Iron Festival in California with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Mad Sin & Jr. Brown. Big John as the singer, guitarist, and lead; sCaroline spanking the bass with outrageous twists, turns, and moves in her playing; in addition, adding in spectacular bellydancing performances; and the new addition JT “Massacre” Brander on the drums banging up the beats. Little Miss Risk and Whiskey Rose charmed all … with dance, tease, and trance. If BJB and the Voodoo Dolls come to your town, it would be a big mistake to miss them … so step right up and “Take your Medicine” at a bar near you celebrating the “Bangtown” that they incite. Tour dates can be found at their web site. They have 4 CD’s and 1 DVD available now as well as some incredibly cool T-shirts and gifts. Highly recommended! Rating: 5+ stars out of 5. The Voodoo Organist (4/22/09) (Three Kings Tavern * Denver)

Voodoo Organist

Voodoo Organist
http://www.voodooorganist.com/
4/22/09 Performance in Denver, Colorado at the Three Kings Tavern * 60 S Broadway * Denver, CO 80209 *
A special treat, opening before Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dolls was “The Voodoo Organist”. Inspired by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, the Cramps, Nick Cave, and Tom Waits – Scott Wexton, a spectacular travelling sideshow preacher / road warrior spinning the tunes of love, lust, and murder. Ranging from heavy rock, frantic post punk disco, industrial jazz, goth, seedy soul, garage rock, and circus-beat. Scott started out as a goth industrialist from Detroit whose band had opened for Nine Inch Nails in the 1990’s. He’s been playing the organ ever since. As he settled in Los Angeles, he became known as the “Voodoo Organist”. Now a two-man duet with drummer Robin Kennon they take the world on with the bizarre playing well over 500 shows coast to coast in the United States alone. His songs have been featured in “Return of the Living Dead IV” and “100 Tears”. Most excellent of a performance, the band is quite talented. Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
