The Gypsy Nomads

Gypsy Nomads
* Performance at Faerieworlds 2010 * Saturday, 31 July 2010 * Faerieworlds * Mt. Pisgah, Eugene, Oregon * http://www.thegypsynomads.com/ *
On to the stage at Faerieworlds all the way from New York came a duo of Gypsy Nomads who shook the stage with a mix of cabaret, celtic, and neo-medieval flavored music meshed with folk, punk, and as they say in their bio – “the vineyards of southern France and the spirit of gypsy sound”. One of my favorite gypsy bands, this team will never disappoint. A definite blessing to the Faerieworlds festival. The duo consist of Samantha Stephenson who through bilingual vocals as being a French-born British chanteuse mesmerizes her audieces with her voice, percussion, lyrics, and drums. Matched in charm with Scott Helland who was quite popular in the punk scene merging in guitar, drums, and guitar loops. This duette whirlwinded together are a lively pair honoring the free spirit lifestyle with adlib juju, theatrics, and enchantment. An absolute pleasure to the eyes and ears. They boast of their wide array of musical styles from the sultry and cheeky French/English songs to Gypsy celtic inspired instrumentals to pounding drums reminiscent of Taiko and march-style choreography as they describe themselves on their website. They’ve hit over 175,000 miles of touring across the United States and Canada over the last five years. They’ve been licensed for Indie films and TV shows, including Oprah Winfrey show and WE TV’s Gothic Wedding show. They’ve made appearances at Philadelphia’s Trocadero Theater, NY’s Brushwoods Center, St Louis’ Focal Point Folk Theater, and INATS Trade Show in Florida and Colorado. They’ve also been on stage with Voltaire, Gandalf Murphy, Candice Night, Incendio, Dragon Ritual Drummers, Ego Likeness, Wendy Rule, Brian Viglione and the White Elephant Burlesque, Lunar Fire as well as amazing belly dance troupes across the U.S. Always enchanting. 5 stars out of 5.

Faerieworlds Day 2: Bad Faeries Night Ritual: “When Darkness Falls”
* Lucretia of Serpentine; Kelly Miller-Lopez of Woodland; Connor Fenix Cobbledick of Kirkos * Saturday, 31 July 2010 * Midnight * Faerieworlds 2010 *

After a stunning performance by Faun, as the witching hour arrived, “as Darkness fell” for the mischievious bad faeries to do their biddings & fun – Kelly Miller-Lopez accompanied by members of Woodland and Faun came on stage for a musical and poetic invocation. Before the stage, corded off for safety, the exotic and mysterious Lucretia of the dance troupe Serpentine brought out her fire flamed fingers for tribal belly dance and fire play. The fire breathing Connor Fenix Cobbledick of the Kirkos fire troupe danced and pranced in playful prose with her. The magic was woven.

Faerieworlds Winter 2010 Celebration: “Bad Faeries” Masquerade Ball

Bad Faeries Masquerade Ball – Faerieworlds Winter Celebration 2010

Faerieworlds Winter 2010 * McDonald Theater * Eugene, Oregon * January 30, 2010 * 7:30-12:30 *

An amazing night following the Good Faeries Night at the 2010 Winter Celebration of Faerieworlds was the notorious “Bad Faeries Night”. For this celebration, it was by far my favorite of the activities spun for the three day event. The doors to Faerieworlds opened up around 7:30 pm, with several merchants in the hall hawking their steampunk and faerie wares; costumes galore with steampunk influence, and kids dancing in the theater awaiting the amazing acts. Blossomed forth from the infamously successful Summer Faerie Festival extravaganza – Faerieworlds – comes a rather new evolution of their festival – The Winter Celebration. Hosted indoors similar to a “Con” rather than a “Festival” – partakers of the merriment gathered together to celebrate Imbolc and the season of Winter with concerts at the McDonald Theater and a marketplace during the day with workshops, activities, and performances at the Lane Events Center in radical Eugene, Oregon. The second night of the event was the “Bad Faeries Masquerade Ball” held exclusively in the McDonald Theater. The Steampunk costumes were amazing. Adam Hurst did a fantastic performance warming up the stage afterwhich was taken over by Seattle’s Steampunk band “Abney Park“. Then Kelly and her bellydance troupe did an Amazing Dryad Imbolc Rite with mesmerizing tree spirits dancing in the moonlight. The evening was concluded with the ethereal and stunning performance of Zoe Jakes and Beats Antique. Simply Amazing Evening. Of course it ended too soon … just after midnight … but all good things must come to an end. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Bad Faeries Masquerade Ball couldn’t be more spectacular then to end with a mesmerizing and enchanting performance by Zoe Jakes and Beats Antique. One of my new favorites … Beats Antique with Zoe Jakes … what an incredible display of style, grace, tribal fusion, beats, and sheer art. Zoë Jakes & Beats Antique is a fusion trio of star American Tribal Fusion bellydancer Zoe Jakes teamed together with Electronic beats DJ’s/musicians David Satori (laptop DJ remix artist; guitar; violin) & Tommy Chappel (laptop DJ remix artist; hand drums). Zoe Jakes often dances with the “Indigo Belly Dance Company” with Rachel Brice and Mardi Love. Zoe specializes in ATS (American Tribal Style) and Tribal fusion mixed with hip-hop pops and locks. Beats Antique has produced a digital EP called “Contraption Vol. 1? composed of glitch-rock, dub, world music, electronic compilations. Since ATS and Tribal fusion are the styles of bellydance I’ve been learning over the last year, I was in utmost awe to see one of my favorite dancer inspirations. This was my second time I’ve been blessed with seeing them perform. Major kudos for the mesmerizing and enchanting performance! Completely blessed my night. Rating: 5 stars out of 5. DC’s 11th Annual Goth Prom

Thursday, 22 May 2008 – Part 5 (10 pm – 2 am)
Washington, D.C.

11th annual D.C. Goth Prom “Under a Milky Way” * Town Danceboutique * 2009 8th Strett NW | Washington, DC 20009 * http://www.gothpromdc.com/

11th Annual Goth Prom, Washington, D.C. 5/22/08

After the National Geographic Live and private reception, I headed over to my ‘first’, while DC’s 11th, Goth Prom which is apparently the longest running Goth Prom in the United States. They even had a Prom King and Queen contest. Prior to this event, I was under the impression that DC really didn’t have a sizeable Goth community (based on last two years fly-ins to D.C. and checking out the scene) but I have to say, after this event – the population exists and the support for the night appeared to be pretty phenomenal. I might have to add this one to my annual calendar of events I go out of my way to attend (of course given time off work and funds). This year it was held at the Town Dancboutique, a two floored club with large levels and plenty of room to dance and move about. The event was $15 advanced tickets or $20 at the door, and that didn’t stop the place from filling up. A wide assortment of DJ’s were spinning on both floors – such as Scary Lady Sarah (Berlin, Chicago – Nocturna); DJ Spider (Charlotte, NC); Kelowna (Toronto-XM Satellite, chiarOscuro DC); Liebchen (DC Midnight, XUBERX); 2501 (Chronos DC, Alchemy DC); Dirty B; Shade (Spellbound DC, Alchemy DC); variety acts such as Cheeky Monkey slideshow performing her Amazing Trinket and MabJustMab acts (including glass walking); bellydancing and gothic tribal upstairs including Cerastes (tribal/industrial dance), Romka (tribal fusion bellydance), and others. Vendors ranged from custom made prom corsages and boutonnieres by Lost Moth; to custom art pieces by Arty4ever, wire jewelry by Eleanor Justice, horror kitsch illustrations and paintings by Frozen Charlotte, clothing and accessories by Dry Tear, Creepy home decor by Morbid Decor, Kilts by The Kilted Nation, custom latex/rubber clothing by Slyx, John Holmes of Bloodrose Industries fashion photography, custom hats and accessories by Peacock Blue, handmade beaded jewelry by Camille DeWalder, and custom t-shirt dsigns by Mind Jacket Designs. The music, talent, decor, acts, and performances were incredible. Drinks a bit higher end priced. Excellent job Lori Beth and all who put this on!!! Plus it was excellent to see my new friends from earlier this year Sarah and Alex who as usual, made me feel right at home as if I lived in D.C. Thank you. Goth prom are slowly putting up pictures in their Gallery here. Rating 5 stars out of 5. Visited 5/22/2008.

* apologies for the lack of quality of pictures for this evening. These were taken from my cell phone camera (no flash) as my camera was out of commission for the evening.
