One of Seattle’s last strong-holds of the Gothic/Industrial clubbing and music community as a central hangout most famous for such in the Pacific Northwest on the American side, it is a volunteer operated private club down-set underground in the Capital Hill Neighborhood of Seattle. They offer some of the regions best Gothic/Industrial and Electronic music DJs and dancing venue. As a private club, membership is mandatory for attendance, and guests can only visit under sponsorship of a member. To become a member, a visitor must be recommended for membership by a current member in good standing … and has to attend via 3 to 5 signed visits within a 6 month period before a member can sponsor a visitor for membership which costs a mere $10. They essentially have something going on every day, ranging from club nights – smoking and smoke free, themed parties, karaoke, and a oddities market. They have a great dance floor, pool room, and a fully stocked bar specializing in Black Orchids.

Chrome: Transit Bar, Canberra, Australia

Chrome Goth Night
* Transit Bar * http://www.gothclublist.com/details/chrome.html * 7 AKUNA ST *
Canberra, Australia Capital Territory, Australia * P 02 6162 0899 * http://transitbar.com.au/ * ?

Eager for some darksome and divine music, I hunted out what could lie beneath the underground of Australia’s capital city … Canberra. A Google search provided promising tales of “Chrome” but came to realize upon arriving it’s night at the “Holy Grail” had vanished without a trace. Knowing that echoes of chatter that it was still located near the corners of Akuna and Bunda streets, we discovered it moved down the street to the infamous underground club … the Transit Bar, located underneath the Canberra YHA. From 9 pm until 5 am, Canberra’s only goth night raises the dead with their EBM, Industrial and dark elektro tunes with some goth on monday nights (instead of the previous saturdays). Video projections, laser lights, and good music was had. Oddly though, the bar was still quite normal with their casually dressed local bar patrons, but up towards the stage in the dance floor were alitter with some finely costumed gothy and cyber dressed dancers. Coming from North America and Germany goth clubs where everyone usually dresses up in their finest black garments, it was a little difficult getting used to the mix of color and normality into this cache of a music club treasure grove one is used to finding when searching for it in most cities. Oddly though, the music was not so industrial and gothic, but more darksome Burning Man raver music. Enjoyed none-the-less and eye candy galore, me and my host had a splendid time. Realizing the night has setup shop in this new location from their fabled old locale, not 100% sure if the night is still happening at the transit bar … could be completely “transit”-ional. Thunderdome @ Burning Man 2010

Thunderdome / Death Guild
* Burning Man * Black Rock City, Nevada * http://www.deathguildthunderdome.com/ *

Every year many Burners look forward to the infamous “Thunderdome”, the interactive art project of San Francisco’s famed “Death Guild”. It is one of Burning Man’s most famous landmarks and one of its most exciting projects/theme camps. Operating for 6 years straight, Burners come to expect Death Guild every year. Inspired by the movie “Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome” (starring Tina Turner and Mel Gibson as Mad Max), “Thunderdome” is a life-sized replica of the same named structure as found in the film. “Two man enter, one man leave” is not really the case here at the Burn, as only friends and friendly-foes who are looking forward to venting some frustration by battling each other with nerf bats while dangling and swinging off bungy cords. All the audience pile around the edge of the dome and climb the rafters to watch the sometimes extremely hillarious battles that take place. Afterwords, it is often a late night Goth/Industrial dance club. Not much activity takes place during the day, but evening it is a very crowded area of the playa. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

The Element (Vancouver, B.C.)

the Element

Cambie Street
Vancouver, British Columbia
Rated ***1/2

Gas Town Inn - Element Pub

Thursday, 11/8/01:
” I hailed down a cab and headed over to the Element on Cambie / Hastings, by the Cambie Hotel. I wasn’t quite sure if I was in the right place, but as I walked in past a restaurant kitchen, back into the dank and dark pub – I saw horror movie and haunted house tacky decor … with a sprawled sign stating I was in “the Element”. I saw Melissa, gave her a hug, and chatted – headed over to Bernie and gave her a hug and wished her “Happy Birthday” as I handed her a gift and watched as she enchanted “the Element” with her dj magic. Chilled out to a couple of drinks with Bernie as other friends appeared and wished her birthday blessings. The element had a intriguing decor of a haunted house with the top pseudo-balcony covered with Halloween stuffed beings and macabre decor. Green fake ferns and air plants sprawled along the ceiling – the evening had great music but lacked numbers of individuals, and at this point, no one dancing. Then came in Jeffy, and two other friends I met previously at a Halloween party – they recognized me without my green makeup and faery wings. We all grabbed a table and chatted away through the night, discussing Skinny Puppy, how we wished we were at the Tori Amos concert, the Survivor series, and other elements of news going on in the world. As I partied with my friend Bernie at the Element and was woo’ed by her dj’ing with excellent 80’s, dance, and Industrial mixes – as the clock struck 12, I decided to head back to Seymour street for a little dancing at my favorite hotspot on Thursdays … Luvafair. The drinks are pricey here but created with pizazz and a good kick. Music was excellent, just lacked the people to fully utilize the dance floor. By the time I was planning on leaving, a handful had started to dance.”

Dominion (Dublin, Ireland)

Dominion Resurrection
* Cellar of Murrays Bar * 33-34 O’Connell Street, Dublin 1, Ireland *
Every Saturday from 9.30 pm – 2.30 am in the cellar of the sports bar called “Murrays” is Ireland’s premiere and only Goth night. Only €3 until 11, afterwards €6 to enter. Darksome and divine, this small little hole is comfortable and roomie for those interested in the sub-culture to gather and dance their night away. I was quite curious how the Goth scene would be in Ireland and was quite pleased to hear some great music. The music was diverse from 80’s to electronic, goth, industrial, to medieval. The particular night I visited on July 3, 2010 – DJ’s Conor, Ozzy aka David Osborn, and Beo aka Christoph Heimann were playing. Good times. Good tunes. However, it was under-attended. There was about a dozen there and they all knew one another. It would appear a bit cliche’ish to those who are shy as I am (until I get to know people I’m actually a shy wallflower) so I’m just as guilty for not having made an attempt to make friends. Having to be at the airport at 4 am, I decided to call it an early night. But I’ll be back. Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.

VNV Nation / System Syn / Revolution State (Colorado Springs – April 8, 2010)

VNV Nation, System Syn, Revolution State
* Thursday, 8 April 2010 * 8 PM – 12:30 AM * The Black Sheep * 2106 E. Platte Ave * Colorado Springs, Colorado *
While I’m not a big fan of the Black Sheep as a venue (too small, too grungy, the sound is often messed up, and other items too numerous to mention here) – I was very pleased with this show, the performers, and the crowd. It’s simply a rarity that VNV Nation will hit a small town like Colorado Springs, especially at the affordable rate of $15.00. The big additional plus is to be able to see Revolution State open up for VNV – which was like icing on the cake. System Syn was great too – so a three-spice addition to the night. VNV of course was amazing as I’ve always seen them be (but wasn’t one of their best shows as the venue wasn’t complimentary to their greatness). A spectacular time was had by all – combining the venue with each of the performers I give the overall concert experience a … 4 stars our of 5. [note – I’ve been to several shows at the Black Sheep [venue rates 2.5 out of 5], I’ve seen System Syn three times – this was an o.k. show for them [rates 4 out of 5], this was a first time for Revolution State – great first impression! [rates 4.5 out of 5 stars] and VNV I’ve seen around the world – six times – this wasn’t their best [rates 4 stars out of 5].
System Syn
http://systemsyn.com/
System Syn is a futurepop/electro-industrial/tech/goth band that started in 1997 and has been pulsating their audiences ever since. Comprised of Clint Carney who makes up the vocals, lyrics, and studio music as well as backup vocals for Imperative Reaction; we have Atom Strange on synthesizers; Jake Strange on guitar and backup vocals; and Jaymie Valentine with live synths and backing vocals (who is also the singer and songwriter for Cindergarden). Together they make an amazing quad of talent.
Revolution State
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Revolution-State/160376909924 or http://www.revstate.com
A Colorado Springs talented duet – Ben and Bonnie P. brings to stage an amazing act of electrifying Industrial/Electro/Tech/IDM Beats. Analogue laden Electro-Noise that brings forth another world – A Revolution State – where modern technology meets vintage instrumentation harmonized to save the Earth. They began in 2000 focused on a philosophy with music and sound to bring it to life. In 2003 they added to songs to the Velvet Acid Christ album ‘Hex Angel’; Utopia Dystopia ‘Misery’ and ‘Eva’. In 2005 They brought to life a live act called “Noizekatt” and released their first LP called “Revolution State” vs. “Noizekatt”. In 2006 two of their remixes were contributed to Velvet Acid Christ’s ‘Wound’ and ‘Ghost Regen’ as well as an ethereal dance remix of ‘Demon Breeder’ to Neikka RPM’s ‘Rise of the 13th Serpent’. They were signed with Vendetta Music in 2007 and since 2009 have been weaving some magical creations and remixes.
VNV Nation
http://www.vnvnation.com/
VNV stands for “Victory Not Vengeance” for a motto of “One should strive to achieve, not sit in bitter regret”. VNV is a European-Duo composed of Ronan Harris on electronics/lyrics/vocals and Mark Jackson on Drums. They bring together a clash of modern and classical Europe culture where mythology and technology live in an uneasy fusion but embracing a world view – comprised of electronic dance music, industrial, trance, synthpop, and EBM (Electronic body music) to ballads and classical inspired music. They serve a contemporary underground club culture and are well known for their Goth, Industrial, and Classical music that is inspired by art, literature, philosophy, and the classics. Originally from Wexford, Republic of Ireland and London and now based in Hamburg, Germany – The Duo began in 1990 when Ronan Harris moved from Dublin to London and put together a collage of orchestral and electronic dance pieces where he self-produced “Body Pulse” and “Strength of Youth”. In 1994 he was signed with the German label “Discordia” and put out the CD “Advance and Follow” – the same year that Mark Jackson joined him as the drummer. In 1998 they signed with the German label “Off-Beat” and released “Praise the Fallen” and the “Solitary EP” in the same year as doing their first headline tour of Germany. By 1999 They signed with Dependent Records, releasing “Empires” and several of their songs hit the German Alternative Charts. By 2001 the first ever VNV Nation album was remastered and released as “Advance and Follow v2”, with more new music on the horizon, hitting the German Media Control Charts and embarking on the highly successful “Futureperfect” tour of Europe and North America. In 2003 They form their own label “Anachron Sounds” and throughout 2003/2004 hold German Music CD and DVD charts. By 2005 They hit 8 major US cities with Front 242 with all shows sold out except the Detroit one affected by a major snowstorm – ‘Matter and Form’ hits #7 on the US Billboard Electronic Chart as well as many other charts around the world. Since 2005 – They have been producing, recording, and touring some amazing stuff and a major favorite of the Gothic/Industrial Club culture.

Abney Park @ Faerieworlds Winter Celebration (1/30/2010)

Abney Park

Abney Park
* Faerieworlds Winter 2010 Celebration * McDonald Theater * Eugene, Oregon * January 30th, 2010 * 9:00-10:30 *
I’ve always been a fan from of Abney Park’s music, but this was an absolute pleasure to see them live, especially at Faerieworlds where the Faeries and otherworldly folk seasoned their outfits Steampunk style. The audience was absolutely rocketted and propelled with intense energy. A Seattle based band – Abney Park to many is the definition of “Steampunk” music. They since about Steampunk culture – about “A time that we wish had bee, a time where airships waged war in the skies, and corsets and cummerbunds were proper adventuring attire”. They definitely have a unique decorative style and influence. I was quite impressed. A goth/industrial band that resides in Seattle, Washington enchanting their audiences for over 12 years. They portray Steampunk airship pirates as crew members of the HMS Ophelia, a British Navy Zeppelin rampaging the skies in the fictional worlds influenced by time travel, Jules Vern, and the Victorian age. The band is not only flavored by Steampunk and Techno-Time travelling pirate and gypsy dress, belly dancers, and astounding outfits but armed with post-apocalyptic clockwork guitars, swashbuckling flintlock bass, middleastern instruments, violins, and Tesla powered keyboards. The Band consists of Robert “Dread Captain Robert” Brown who does lead vocals and songwriting playing the darbuka, diatonic button accordian, jembe, harmonica, and other instruments; teamed with Kristina “Angel” Erickson also on vocals, with navigation, keyboards, and flair; Daniel C on bass and pocket guitar; Jody Ellen on vocals; and Nathaniel “Two Sheds” Johnstone on guitar, violin, mandolin, bouzouki, and other such instruments. This band is absolutely fabulous and multi-talented. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

06.29.09: BABYLAND, ELETE, PLASMACRASH & DJ FOUST

BABYLAND, ELETE, PLASMACRASH & DJ FOUST * Monday June 29, 2009 * Quixotes True Blue * 2637 Welton Street * Denver, Colorado * 16+/8 pm/ $10 * Quixotes True Blue and The Evil Poodle Productions *

Next door to Cervantes Master Theater lies their small bar/lounge/dive that is a nice comfortable space with a small stage and dance floor. Down in the depths below are concert recordings and hard to find collectibles to add to your nostalgia needs. Bar prices are reasonable and the DJ between the acts was excellent. Sponsors for the event had quite a fun setup. However, it was a monday afterall, and we all know what that means when mixed with work schedules, it was poorly attended. A larger audience might have feeded the spirit and the adrenaline for the event, and perhaps would of fed the energy level of the opening acts, but unfortunately all of the acts live didn’t meet up to the music they weave on their websites. In addition, since the music style and hardness are not my ideal likings, I’m not going to give the bands each the typical 1-5 rating guage as I believe I might be biased. The entire event and all performances statistically equate to 2 stars out of 5. Babyland as expected was the highlight of the evening, and they were definitely good, but beyond their presence and unique instrumentation; merged with the spirit of the good DJ, and good friends in the audience, my captivity of attention would not have lasted as long as it did. I’ll leave it at that.

Babyland www.myspace.com/babylandmusic * 6/29/09 show at Quixotes True Blue in Denver, Colorado *
From the heart of the city of Lost Angels comes a electronic junk punk band to bring the spirit of L.A. to the heart of Denver. This compadre of spirits melds together electronic music with hardcore and junk noise demonstrating extreme emotions that one would expect out of Los Angeles reflecting humankind’s continual evolution and search for meaning within the human existence (as outlined on their site). Babyland relies heavily on experimentation and machinery from mechanical noise to primitive rhythmns. They were the heart to this particular evening, beating life to the event.

Elete www.myspace.com/denverelete * 6/29/09 show at Quixotes True Blue in Denver, Colorado *
A local Denver band concieved and created by the ex-Lexen metal frontman and industrial hip hop artist ‘Roman Only’. Roman joined with Mike Oxbig, Will Oxbig, and Will Mendoza on guitars, WMD on bass, and Che-Cho on drums brings this band together. They have a hard rock/metal flavor bursting their synthesizer and guitars mashing crunch, glitch, metal, and industrial. Not my style of music, but those in the audience appeared to enjoy it.

Plasmacrash www.myspace.com/plasmacrash * 6/29/09 show at Quixotes True Blue in Denver, Colorado *
Another local Colorado metal band, this time down from Fort Collins they bill themselves as music for the post Apocalypse. Labelled as Metal and Industrial they live to that title. The band came to be at the end of the 2005 Colorado Dark Arts Festival by college radio DJ’s Asbestos (Big Tim) and Rivet until joined in 2007 by Thick Noose guitarist Chaotic Weevil; and joined in 2008 by ALH members Joey Gunn and Nic Bastrd. Again while I’m a fan on industrial, I’m not on the harder metal scene, so they weren’t exactly my thing – I didn’t enjoy the performance, but find their music on their website much more attractive.

Volcano Burn at Apogaea 2009

Apogaea 2009
http://www.apogaea.com

Happy Ass Ranch, Lake George, Colorado * Annually each June * Colorado’s Regional Burn *

Every year the local Colorado Burner community puts together a regional burn in central eastern Colorado called “Apogaea”. An amazing festival of arts, sustainability, and community with leave-no-trace green thumbs on a wild ranch on 140 private acres of Rocky Mountain forested land blended with a community ethic to attain self-sufficiency, production of renewable energy, creation of agricultural base, and the development of mineral resources and mining reclamation. They possess a low-impact approach supportive of environmental preservation. The lands are surrounded by Pikes National Forest. Apogaea is a great testing ground for the local Burning Man community to set up and test their theme camp ideas for Burning Man. This year the theme was a sacrifice of the virgin offering to the Volcano Gods … incredible fire spinning and dancing, ritualized dramatic performances, and a festive dance around the bonfire. Dozens of theme camps and DJ booths, wild parties, workshops, and special events. Art installations and theme camps. Bodypainting. Contact Improv. Cuddle Camp. Safe Sex Play. Dancing. Hulahooping. Camel racing. Color book sessions. Multi-colored goats that you could learn how to milk. Pancake and bacon breakfasts and parties. Xpat Alien parties at the Crop Circle Cantina. Festivity, Friends, and Community. Apogaea is simply amazing. Highly recommended especially for any Burning Man enthusiasts and community. Goth night at Castle “Pulp” (Duisburg, Germany)

PULP
* Wanheimer Strasse 231a, Duisburg-Hochfeld, Germany * +49 (0)203 363 7900 (Th-Sa from 6 PM) * http://pulp-duisburg.de/
Each thursday is Goth/80s/Medieval/Industrial night at the Pulp Nightclub and Restaurant. Held in a large castle full with the ambiance of a medieval castle intact with decor and furnishings …mult-roomed normally with 3 club rooms. An 80’s/new wave court, upstairs a Medieval/Goth music club room, and “The Cave” for medieval/goth/industrial/electro. The top floor was closed during this visit on 4/2/09. My favorite room was the 80’s/darkwave room for dancing and flirting. Drinks were cheap and bar services excellent. As in German tradition drink cards were issued with no tipping expected as usual as found in Germany. Making drinking budget go further. A big banquet room with a buffet and fire-roasted meats were offered for bountiful plates for only a few Euro in cost. The club is open usually until 5 or 6 am. The decorations and ambiance of the club is mindblowing. Excellent DJ’s, music, and selections. Apparently, Drago, the owner, turned the formerly run-down train station into a castle/fortress replica, with full decor. The venue is known as the “event castle in Duisburg”. DJs : Alexx, Dirk, Franko, Mario, Robert, et al. Rating 5 stars out of 5.

Lady of the Rhine, Part 2: Chapter 8 – Dusseldorf, Gothic clubbing at Pulp

Thursday, 2 April 2009
Dusseldorf – Duisburg, Germany

The adventurers slept in past noon, as they were up late and didn’t get to sleep but until the wee hours of the morning. Sir Thomas Leaf was up to 4:30 am alone. Around noon, the party did laundry and a late breakfast. Lady Vanessa off on an interview, and Sir Thomas Leaf headed to the old town part of Dusseldorf for some sights, exploring, and hanging out in a cafe. Hittsville, one of Sir Thomas Leaf’s favorite little CD/vinyl/music shoppes caught his attention for a bit as well as the K12. Both great music and clothes shops in Dusseldorf. Around evening they rested and headed off for a journey to Duisburg after a great chocolate sponge cake with custard.

Lady Vanessa and Princess Brea ready to go off clubbing

On to Duisburg to meet up with Lord Sven to discuss strategy in the castle club known as “Pulp”. A banquet feast for only a few Euros with fire roasted meats and vegetables in a large buffet fit for a king. Feasting and merriment ensued between Lord Sven, Lady Vanessa, Sir Thomas Leaf, and Princess Breanna. Two club rooms of dancing; one 80’s / new wave; the other called “the Cave” was medieval, goth, industrial, electro. Much of the dancing style in the cave was very rhythmic “chopping” line dance style that Lady Vanessa described as “too martial arts style taking up too much room on the dance floor per individual”. The 80’s room which most of us preferred as there was offered more space to dance. Sir Thomas Leaf danced up a storm. Dancing, drinking, flirting, and merriment continued. Sir Thomas Leaf being from a higher elevation so higher tolerance for alcohol at sea levels; and two trips to the buffet, ran through his 26 Euro drink card and over to a new card eating up 9 Euro on it. The adventurers stayed only until about 2 am, as they had a long trip to Worms tomorrow. Nonetheless, Sir Thomas Leaf had to be pulled away from the dance floor.

Requiem in Black (1/22/09 – Denver)

Requiem in Black

Requiem in Black
http://www.requieminblack.com/

One of Denver’s great music talents, Requiem in Black combine sound with artistry in their music and performances. A two person band: Aeren doing the Beats, Keyboards, Programming, Mixing, Promotions, and Booking; with Jessie as the sultry vocals, Lyrics, Keyboards, Engineering, Mastering, Merchandising. Starting in 2006, Requiem in Black can be described as Goth and dark electronic music, with some EBM; as they offer vital older influences of the 80’s/90’s and beyond such as Gary Numan, VNV, APOP, Wolfsheim, Covenant, Wumpscut, Cruxshadows, Seabound, Angels & Agony, and others that one reviewer described as “1984 soundtrack-era Eurythmics inspired”. As of this writing, they have 2 cds out. They are named after the term that defines “funeral songs”. Their performance this even of 22 January 2009 at the Cervantes theater was a masterpiece in of itself. Great job! Rating : 4 stars out of 5.

Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom is a spectacular little concert hall in the heart of historic Five points in downtown Denver. A two-floor venue with a main dance/concert floor, stage, tables, and booths; upstairs being a wrap-around balcony with tables, chairs, and comfy couches. The Ballroom is located in the old historic Casino Cabaret that dates back to the Cotton Club days of the 1930’s when jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Count Bassie, and Benny Goodman toured and played. Through the years greats such as Ike and Tina Turner, BB King, Jimmy Smith, and many others performed. With space to hold over 700 patrons, with great space, easy flow access to the bar and bathroom, and a well ventilated, non-smoking space. Incredible murals of various artistic styles speckle the walls. Incredible sound systems, and lighting, and hanging from the ceiling is claimed to be the nation’s largest disco ball measuring approximately 5 feet in diameter. The staff and bar are friendly and courteous, and the drinks good and well priced. Every concert I’ve attended here has always been a fabulous experience. Thank you Cervantes! Mardi Gras! – DJs Phae, DuJour, and Gleek; Vending of Gothic goodies by Silver Phoenix. Much more of a sports bar / meeting hall ambiance, so lacked in comparison to its competitor down the street. Mardi Gras! – This particular club-going experience was decked all out for celebrating Mardi Gras. Costuming was highly encouraged as well as donning the beads and masks. Don’t have one, they provided masks at the door for $1. Excellent idea for clubs pushing costumed nights as it helped this weary traveller who walked the streets of downtown D.C. looking for masks to prepare yet didn’t find one. On foot from the local Hostelling International, about 8 blocks away, that came as a welcomed idea. They also beaded us up as we entered the door. I arrived around 10 pm, it was slow to populate, but the music was good minus some speaker issues they were having. I had my fill of the cheap on special themed Hurricane drinks and got some good dancing in. Patrons all seemed to have a good time and the ambiance was very nice. DJs Shade, Transept, and Skunque did a fabulous job. Great music and selections. Great dancing and festivities. Recessions also served some good food, I had the Crab cakes which were affordable and quite tasty. Much more mature crowd at Spellbound.Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5.

Exposure @ Club LIV

Exposure @ Club Liv * http://www.exposure-dc.com/ * 2001 11th Street NW Washington DC 20001 * 18+ event | cover $5.00 21+/$7 18-21 * open 9:00 PM – 2:00 AM
Nestled in Club Liv on thursdays resides a dark alternative night playing dark synthpop, goth, and industrial by DJ’s Ras DNA, Mindcage, Missguided, Purevil, and Vlad. The night was slow to pickup, but by midnight had about 20-30 perhaps. Plenty of room to dance, drinks were small but potent, and very pricy from what I’m used to in my wanderings. I liked the nightclub space and couches. Everyone was very friendly and social. The music was good. We had a drunken good time. Rating: 3 stars out of 5.

The Church (Denver) (Friday, 2/6/09)

The Church, Fridays (Denver, Colorado)

http://www.coclubs.com/church/churchMain.html * 1160 Lincoln, Denver, CO 80203 * 303-832-2383 * churchmanager@coclubs.com

Located in a artsy art-deco cathedral, this multi-roomed/ multi-bar club has an ambience worth dying for. With a delicious sushi bar (2009: back in business and delicious as ever!) in one of the back rooms next to the VIP lounge, this bar has it all. I originally visited the venue during the Colorado Dark Arts Festival in 2006 and had an incredible time at their establishment. Sunday nights they have Goth in the basement and hiphop up above. Fridays, there is a derivative of sundays in which 1 (instead of 2 (the other had hiphop)) of the downstairs rooms hosts Goth/Industrial/EBM. Music is enchanting, though the mish-mash of sub-cultural patrons, not as favorable as club nights when everyone is of like-mind and like-dress, but fun nonetheless. We visited the Church this friday for a friends’ birthday which definitely gave me a much better friday night Church experience. Music was good. Rating: 4 stars out of 5. Visited 2/6/2009. The quality of the night is on an upward spiral and is enjoyable again. 12/15/06 – Update: the quality of the night has spiraled down substantially for the Goth room is no longer 18+ and they charge an outrageous $10 cover for guys (free for ladies). It has become quite lame for fridays. Though the music in the Goth room is still very good – much more 80’s flavor these days (July 2008). Sundays still hold the charm and beauty though. Fridays (Goth): Rating 3 stars. Visited 7/18/08.

Combichrist with Black Light Burns @ The Marquis (Denver, Co)

Combichrist with Black Light Burns and Stolen Babies
Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 8:00pm * The Marquis Theater * 2009 Larimer Street * Denver, Colorado * 8664687621
I haven’t seen Combichrist since the concert I attended their show at the K-17 in Berlin in 2007! Of course this “States” version is nothing to compare with the Berlin show. But Combichrist nonetheless! Combichrist is the brainchild of Andy LePlagua and born from the metal and hardcore soul of Norway’s music industry. Black Light Burns is an American alternative/hard rock band created by Wes Borland with industrial and gothic aspects. The band has an interesting recording lineup in its members such as Borland himself, along with Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails), Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), and Josh Freese (The Vandals, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, and Devo). I unfortunately can’t comment on “Stolen Babies” since I missed their act. The venue was a poor choice, very crowded and in some regards difficult to see since it was packed to the rafters. The show was still phenomenal. The Marquis had decently priced drinks and good pizza, and had a funny bouncy floor up towards the base of the stage. Excellent show! Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

The Shelter and Milk Nightclub (Denver, Colorado)

The Shelter and MILK Night Club * Wednesdays/Saturdays * 1037 Broadway * Denver, CO 80203 * (303) 534-0222 *21+ * www.myspace.com/sheltersat

Every Saturday @ The Milkbar is one of Denver’s most infamous Goth clubs – Shelter/Milk. DJ MFR (Mike Rich) spins retro 80’s in the milk bar while DJ’s Fleisch and Ivo spin Dark Alternative, Ebm, Electroclash, and Industrial in the Jazz Bar. Both rooms, downstairs of Bar Standard. Strong and great drink specials with $2 wells until 11:00pm. It’s free cover till 10:00 pm, and only $5 after. Has an outdoor smoking patio. Downstairs is a basement decor with exposed brick walls, vaulted ceilings, wood and tile floors with steel surfaces throughout the house. They have a state-of-the-art sound system that often projecs house/electronica/hip-hop upstairs, with rock and goth downstairs. Occasionally the upper smoking patio has DJ’ing too. Also has a roof-top patio (not often open) upstairs with great views of the Denver skyline. Goth Saturdays and Wednesdays are fabulous with some of the best music being spun in Colorado. Danse Macabre (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

Danse Macabre * Thursdays * The Rocket Room * 230 Pueblo Avenue * Colorado Springs, Colorado * 719.447.4990

A great new goth/industrial/neo-folk night in the Springs area. Each thursday at the infamous Rocket Room. Free cover, 21+. Medium size venue with a very tiny dancefloor, but excellent drink prices and service. The mesmerizing compilations dj’ed by Blue Girl enchants your soul and puts you at peace. Its a new spin to the Goth/EBM/Industrial club selection in that Blue Girl specializes in new and old school Goth, Dark Wave, Industrial, Neo-Folk, and Pagan music. Its a perfect mixer and evening to start your weekend early or build up your energy for the weekend. My most favorite weekly night in the Springs. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Bodypainting @ “Timeless” Fetish New Years Eve Party @ The Underground

“Timeless” New Year’s Eve Fetish Party @ the Underground
The Underground Club * 110 North Nevada * Colorado Springs, Colorado * 719 – 578 – 7771 * undergroundbars.com or www.myspace.com/fetishes
Another fun-filled fabulous fetish event put on by the Underground and Mistress Satori – with the committment to excellence that we’ve come to know them for by improving the night, the venue, the entertainment, music, and acts as they have with each and every fetish night since they began. This event’s theme was “Timeless” as we celebrated with bidding farewell to 2008 and a welcoming to 2009 with kinky fun and frolic. Live DJ’s in both rooms spinning the best of 80’s, goth, industrial, EBM, Synth-pop, and Old School by the Anti-DJ, DJ Fiend, DJ Gypsy, and DJ Sky (upstairs apparently didn’t work out since it was below freezing for the night instead setting up in the main bar) and downstairs in the boiler room with a sizeable spectacular dance floor we’ve come to love. Local artists like Gary of Vernal Goddess Studios, vendors, drink specials, live shibari by Pasha, bodypainting by Leaf and Doug of the Tree Leaves’ Oracle, and bdsm performances by Mistress Satori, “V”, and LHS throughout the night from 10 pm until close to 3 am. No cover for the 21+, only $5 cover for the 18-20 year olds. One of the best and most affordable places to be on New Years’ Eve in Colorado Springs. A fabulous time was had by all who attended. Don’t miss this event next year! Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

Sanctuary Saturday (Vancouver, British Columbia)

Dancefloor at Sanctuary (Club 23 West)

Sanctuary Saturday @ Club 23 West * http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2321964024 * 1st/3rd/5th Saturday every month @ Club 23 West: 23 West Cordova, Vancouver, British Columbia
Ah, back in the day when I first moved to Vancouver, this was the only Goth/Industrial club I could find in Vancouver when i first moved there during Y2K. At that time it was at the Purple Onion. This fabulous night was established in 1997 and is the longest-running night in Vancouver that’s dedicated to the Goth/Industrial/Underground and alternative music culture. DJ Pandemonium who started the night is still keeping it alive and beating serving the best of alternative/synth/electro/new wave/80’s/90’s/rock/goth/industrial/ebm/ and synthpop. Now joined with DJ’s R-Lex, Vortex, Contrasoma and periodic guests; its taken hold on Saturdays instead of Sundays in the infamous thriving ground of Sin City at its home in Club 23 West. Doors at 9 and the party lasts til 3 am. Free before 10, students free till 11, and two-for-one’s with cab receipt all night. $6 cover after 10, $1 off if dressed to impress. I’ve been a fan of this night since early 2000 attending every year since then, when I lived in Vancouver it was a weekly attendance, when living in Seattle it was a bi-monthly venture, and even when I was living in L.A., Miami, and Colorado … I still came back at least a half a dozen times throughout the year with Sanctuary and Sin City as driving forces to selecting calendar dates to visit. Its a must visit venue for anyone in the underground scene that wants a great place to dance, meet people, and slam some drinks down. Dress to impress! Now with two floors: upstairs and downstairs spinning the best in the dark scene. Rating: 5 stars out of 5. Previous reviews I’ve written: http://www.technogypsie.com/reviews/?p=17, http://thesinglelife.net/archives/2005/12/13/sanctuary-celebrities-vancouver-bc, http://wanderwords.com/archives/2006/11/04/272, http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/Canada/Province_of_British_Columbia/Vancouver-903183/Nightlife-Vancouver-Celebrities-BR-1.html. Revisit on 7/4/2009 – Still amazing music and a fabulous dance floor. Still yet one of my most favorite nights!!! Thank you Isaac!!!

Photogallery from the evening
Disintegration is one of the first goth clubs I attended in Denver and will always hold a special place in my heart because of it. I’ve watched it disintegrate and re-appear, keeping life and vitality through the three years I’ve lived here as it manifested itself at various venues. This is my first attendance at its new home – Benders. Great dance space and decent drinks. DJ Slave 1 and crew of course spin ecstatic pleasures and mesmerizing rhthymns as we’ve come to know Disintegration for. Westword rates Disintegration as Denver’s best industrial/goth/new wave/deathrock/synthpop/ebm dance night! On 7/25/08 a cause for celebration took place as DJ Slave 1 was celebrating her birthday at the event with some fabulous music, great guest dj’s, and a steam punk theme with absinthe flowing in the house. Good crowd, Happy patrons, and festivities were had by all. A few rambuncious arm flailers on the dance floor which caused some annoyance, but overall it was a pretty fabulous night. DJ Slave 1 and On1X with guest DJ DY Lynx did a fabulous job; while DJ’s Slim Fadey and Acid Burn with guest Tamara DJ’ed the front. Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5. Visited 7/25/08.

Espermachine @ the Underground 7.23.08

EsperMachine: Dying Life Tour 2008

* The Underground * Colorado Springs, Colorado *

http://www.myspace.com/espermachinemusic

It was a quiet and calm evening in Colorado Springs … being a wednesday for that is expected in a small town like C.S. But something was stirring down in the former meat packing plant (the rumor) now called “The Underground” on the corner of Kiowa and Nevada. A band was swooping through town on their “Dying Life” tour … it was the band “EsperMachine” who I think originates from the Kansas/Missouri hood. Some covers and originals this band rocked the very foundation of the Underground with techno, electro, and gothic beats. It was definitely a special treat for Colorado Springs, as in this day and age, we don’t get many really good underground and industrial bands in our neck of the woods. Even though it was poorly under-attended by our local goth community, it didn’t stop those attending and the band to stomp, dance, and spin all night long. Its a feather in their cap to be able to claim that 80% of those attending their concert danced to most of their songs. The opening band I didn’t give much of a chance for a listen as I wasn’t impressed with the music. EsperMachine however was fabulous. Thank you for coming by our little town. According to the bands site … EsperMachine was born in 2005 as a post-punk, darkwave duo named Project 9. By 2007 they evolved as a trio, and are now a celebration of dark dance music devoted to their EBM/Industrial audience. Their fusion of heavy, industrial rhythms, atmospheric textures and haunting melodies has their audiences dancing and forgetting. Rating 4 stars out of 5. Viewed 7/23/08.

“2008 Underground “Adrogyny Ball” Fetish Night
The Underground Bar * 110 N Nevada * corner of Kiowa/Nevada * downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado * 9 pm – 1:30 am * 18+ *

We arrived early around 7:30 pm to set up our bodypainting and tarot booth. Setup went quicker than usual as we had different equipment this time around. A slow night for the Fetish events as it occured on a sunday, but a blast nonetheless. The theme for tonight was “Adrogyny Ball” : Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls as the Underground opened its doors to the start of Pride week in Colorado Springs today. Crossdressing fun and costumes were abound. Fetish performance art by Mistress Satori, Goth, EBM, Industrial, and 80’s music with DJ’s DCM8 and Paradigm downstairs, and DJ Gypsy spinning 80’s upstairs. Bodypainting by Leaf and Doug of the Tree Leaves’ Oracle, Shibari Rope Bondage by Pasha Hassan Al Ghol, Unique costume masks and art by Brigid of Brighid’s House of Masks, and special guest visual artists Gary Merrill of Vernal Goddess Studios, and Chris Smeltser. Malediction Society, Hollywood, California

  Malediction Society Sundays * http://www.myspace.com/maledictionsociety or maledictionsociety.com * The Monte Cristo – 3100 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90010

Malediction

Another great night at the Monte Cristo by djs Xian and Amanda Jones. Tonight’s party as well as the first sunday of each month is astrologically themed balls and this particular night for the sign of Cancer. Xian spinning what she knows best … Neoclassical Darkwave, Industrial, EBM, Synthpop, Steampunk, Neovictorian. Plus the night is enamoured with the infamous absinthe bar. Tarot readers and photographers. It’s been a while since I’ve been back to Los Angeles, but by and far, one of my favorite LA club nights next to Ruin. Thanks Xian and Amanda! fabulous night … a night to die for. Rating 5 stars out of 5.
