White Eagle Hotel and Pub
~ 836 N Russell St, Portland, OR 97227
Phone: (503) 282-6810 ~

Another McMannamin’s favorite tourist destinations, the White Eagle is more of a hostel than it is a hotel. It is located in one of the micro-brewery destination neighborhoods of Portland, Eliot in North Portland with a style of a hotel in glamour of rock n’ roll themed lodging and saloon. The building dates back to 1905. The basic rooms are located above the pub and individually furnished, has free wi-fi, and wash basins. Some rooms have bun beds. There is no air conditioning and the bathrooms are shared between rooms. The bar has a artsy feel, with rock-n-roll and odd sideshow decor, with a beer garden and nightly live music. The establishment lacks in parking, although it has a very small lot. While we have yet had a chance to lodge in this hotel, we did eat and drink at the pub in the beer garden. Service was friendly, albeit moderate in speed. It was overall a good experience. Rating: 3 stars out of 5

The Tavern:

Folklore: – the Tavern is purported to be haunted. According to Ghosts and Critters this is a favorite haunted night spot. There are tales from Jeff, the assistant manager and other employees that various strange events happen on occasion, especially after hours. There was a time when the bar was empty and employees smelled smoke inside. They investigated and never found evidence of fire, and on occasion in addition to this smell, they would be overcome with the odor of cheap perfume. Once Jeff while working in the kitchen had witnessed a menu board fly across the doorway to the basement and strike flat against the left-hand wall with a loud clap. He couldn’t figure out how that happened. Especially on its own, with no employees nearby except for one standing behind him and witnessing the event.

V Bar (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

getting drinks at V Bar

Bar V (or V Bar)

* 19 E Kiowa St * Colorado Springs, CO 80903 * (719) 471-8622

A great low-key bar in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, off one of the side streets, low light, and tucked in as a cool, dark, art-deco hide-a-way located near 15c and Rubbish Gallery. The bartenders are extremely friendly and talented at making drinks, the atmosphere warm and accepting, and everyone friendly. Music during happy hours on fridays until the late night crowd arrives is a fantastic mix of alternative 80’s that brings any 80’s child down memory lane. Saturdays provide hip hop, techno, and sometimes electronic. I’ve come to enjoy this place as an absinthe bar for they now carry three to four different brands and have the proper water dripping absinthe tap. This is by far my favorite local hangout. On the weekends they have live djs with house or hip hop, but rest of the week is alternative selections from the bartenders, such as Ivaldo, with which combination rocks. The martinis as well, especially the Chocolate V, are quite tasty and superbly made. As well, this place has a selection of at least 4 top shelf absinthe to choose from and adds a wonderful ambiance to the absinthe experience. This bar could pull off labeling itself a much-needed absinthe bar if they wanted to take that angle. Rating: 5 stars out of 5.

The Ritz Grill (Fat Tuesday) (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

Crawfish Po’Boy

Fat Tuesday @ the Ritz Grill * http://ritzgrill.com/
* 15 S Tejon St * Colorado Springs, CO 80903 * (719) 635-8484 *

Fun times during Fat Tuesday. Apparently (news to me this first year I’ve attended) the Ritz Grill on Tejon street, downtown Colorado Springs throws the area’s best Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras party in the city. Decked out in costumes and beads, decorations, and Cajun cuisine … The Grill brings in the Raw oysters, the Craw Daddies, and the Gumbo for your palate’s best New Orleans mix. Bringing on the Hurricanes as well – get there early as the place is crowded, also reserve a table for this special event or you’ll be standing around outside or in the bar. Hurricanes, complimentary cajun beans n/ rice, and we ordered the raw Oysters cracked on the half shell with Fried Crawfish po’boy and platter. Delicious. Good times. A Head Full of Zombies band played into the night as some bead-winning events took place. Good times. Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

Backtrax * 80’s Night at the Underground Bar, Colorado Springs, CO

  BackTrax * 110 N. Nevada, Colorado Springs, Colorado * 719.578.7771
DJ Gypsy spinning the retro sounds of the DISCO 70’s and Rockin’ 80’s in the Boiler Room All Night Long. 10:00 pm – 2:00 am; Ages 18-20 $5.00 cover, 21+ free.
The Underground’s start of a positive trend with a new (potentially monthly) fabulous night called “BackTrax” specializing in the fabulous tunes of the alternative 70’s/80’s with one of Colorado Springs’ hottest DJ’s … DJ Gypsy. The atmosphere was stepping back into the past with patrons dressed up in their 80’s attire. The music spectacular, and the dancing fanatic. Fun was had all night long. Lots of drinking and flirting all around. I hope this night stays as it would certainly be a blessing to Colorado Springs. Kudos all around to DJ Gypsy and the Underground. Rating: 5 stars out of 5. Blondie’s (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

ondies Sports Bar and Grill
* 24 N. Tejon, Colorado Springs, Colorado *

I’ve been to Blondie’s a few times. Originally set out with an alternative zing, but has since degraded to a standard yuppie bar with your normal mainstream folk. It started out as a sports bar with blonde waitresses, plasma TVs, pool tables and live music three or four nights a week. My timing must be off as I’ve never seen live entertainment at the club and the place, while double-story, is too tight and small with the crowds it gets in. Mobility in the place can be difficult at times without banging elbows. Especially the dance floor which is placed in the middle of the walkway between the downstairs bar and the bathrooms which makes dancing difficult and obnoxious when you constantly have a stream of folks walking through it. Upstairs is a nice patio with a fire pit, and is probably the only saving grace of the joint as everyone likes a fire on a cold Colorado night to socialize around. But more and more, mainly the clientele, I’ve lost interest in this place. It does connect with Rum Bay. You can easily walk between the bars as you like through the Red martini bar and on into Rum Bay. The music is ok, and has declined in flavor. Stage dancers are a feature of the lower level dance floor. Rating: 3 stars out of 5. Visited 01/15/2010.

Former Review:
24 N. Tejon, Colorado Springs, Colorado
Article about opening
is meant to be a sports bar with blonde waitresses, plasma TVs, pool tables and live music three or four nights a week. It includes 2,900 square feet — the old Gray Rose women’s apparel store before it became a motorcycle shop — and will have a large deck out the back door that it will share with the Wildcats club inside Rum Bay. The second level is the Red Martini which is a combination martini, wine and cigar bar with an outdoor deck overlooking Tejon Street. First visit, I like the ambience, though the patrons are your typical clubsters, fakesters, and party crowd that you find at every other mainstream club. But the music was good (80’s on this friday night) and a small dance floor, with paid beautiful dancers in black bikinis stage dancing, and the drinks were good – waittresses were blonde, and friendly. I’ll return. Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5. (For the Springs in of itself, really a 4.50 based on first impressions, since there is not much to speak of in the Springs with an alternative zing … )

Shugas (Colorado Springs, CO)

Shuga’s
702 S. Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80903 719.328.1412
http://www.myspace.com/shugasbar or http://www.shugas.com/

A quaint little bar * cafe * restaurant in a nice cozy neighborhood on South Cascade between Cimarron and I-25. Nestled amongst cute little houses, this artsy warm bar has a friendly staff, food and drinks to die for, and an ambience quite undescribable. Japanese paper art decorates the ceiling, art deco on the walls.

I had the Chicken Club and coconut shrimp soup, and the dark and stormy cocktail. Delicious! I went on Tuesday night, while they were having their movie night – double feature: Labyrinth/Legend. While I couldn’t stay for both, I certainly enjoyed the night. Thanks!!! Rating 5 stars out of 5. Visited 1/23/07.
