Firehouse BBQ (Colorado Springs, Colorado) : Closed

Firehouse Southern Style BBQ
~ 817 W Colorado Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80905 | (719) 447-8829. 2018 update: Location permanently Closed. ~

Oh the distinct Southern smells, charm, and culinary offerings – Firehouse BBQ was by far one of my favorite Barbecque shacks I’ve been to. Granted fully aware the cuisine is extremely unhealthy, fat inducing, and bad for the heart – nonetheless my childhood tastebuds were always pleased with the experience, body aside. If you’re willing to risk your body’s health, then this is one of the top places to get quality meats – chicken, pork, beef, with home-made sauces to satiate the hunger. Great location with ample parking, friendly staff, but service was slow and portion sizes were minimal (my body thanked that, but my hunger did not). It was a good farewell for me enjoying perhaps my last meal of this kind of food as I was soon moving to Australia and Europe. I had a good farewell tour. Apparently though after returning several years later this establishment had its own farewell and no longer exists. This review is but a historical tribute to the location.

Starbucks (Old Colorado City, Colorado)

Starbucks (Old Colorado City, Colorado)

The only Starbucks in Old Colorado City and Manitou, this great location has a friendly staff, good drinks, and great seating area. The internet is strong and allows productivity. One of my favorite Starbucks in my neighborhood. There is a bit of transient traffic from the street corner and “sleepers” that seem to lounge there which is a pain when you want to have a place to sit or work and have to sit somewhere uncomfortable because a non-paying guest is sleeping on the comfy chairs. (This has somewhat been remedied for 2018 as they installed daily changing code locks on the bathrooms which seems to have pushed a majority of the transients out but unfotunately when you have a toddler who is potty trained to go to the bathroom on his own and gets blocked by a locked door – so really wished they didn’t do this.) Otherwise my experiences have been great here. Rating: 3 stars out of 5 Visited 9/5/17, 1/29/18

Vermijo Community Garden (Old Colorado City)

Vermijo Community Garden
* http://www.ppugardens.org/community_gardens * Vermijo Park on Vermijo Ave and 26th Stree, Old Colorado City, Colorado Springs, Colorado * To rent: info@ppugardens.org *

A beautiful community garden, on the edge of Vermijo Park, downtown Old Colorado City where residents teamed up with the PPUG and funded by the Colorado Home and Garden Show/Care and Share have developed this small unused parcel for a community growing space. It was founded by community member Larry Stebbins who put it all together. Residents in the area can rent plots up to 400 square feet where they can garden and grow vegetables. Community gardens take more committment than a garden in one’s own yard, as the gardener has to visit a couple of times a week with their own tools and supplies rather than step out their back door. However, a perfect solution for the green-thumb types that want a garden but lack yard space to have one. I had the pleasure of seeing this nice space when I visited the wonderful garden as one of the resident Garden Faeries gave a deluxe tour of the plots and invited wanderers from the 2010 Colorado Faerie Festival to come in and offer the nature spirits a rock that they could paint. Very creative constructive idea that added blessings to the garden as well as the festival. Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

DJ Gypsy spinning 80’s at Thunder and Buttons

A new night in the works getting Colorado Springs back into the 80’s flair with the amazing DJ Gypsy enchanting all with some of the best of the era. Definitely a much needed new night for the area. A saloon hosts the night that is named after some local history. In 1888 a Colorado City resident named Prairie Dog O’Byrne had a carriage pulled by two elk he named ‘Thunder’ and ‘Buttons’. His infamous partner from the Red light district Laura Bell would race this carriage up and down the very street where this saloon is located. This saloon was established and named in their honor. Established in 1978 it burnt down 10 years later. It was re-established in 2004 by an Air Force Academy graduate as Thunder and Buttons II. It now hosts a pretty popular bar and grill with various entertainment nights such as this 80’s night to mark up its calendar for fun and frolick. DJ Gypsy is definitely providing a good draw of music and charm to spice up everyone’s thursday nights. I hope this night continues as it is definitely a blessing for the local scene. Looking forward to more fine evenings having a blast to the past.
