Rosewood Market (Columbia, South Carolina)

Rosewood Market
* 2803 Rosewood Dr * Columbia, SC 29205 * (803) 256-6410 * http://www.rosewoodmarket.com/ *

A nice alternative to Whole Foods … this wonderful local natural grocery store and community center has all of your natural, organic, and healthy lifestyle grocery and health needs. Still high priced like Wholefoods (but a bit more affordable), Rosewood Market is worth the support. If you live in or will be travelling through Columbia, South Carolina – this is a great place for grocery shopping and finding out about up-to-date community events. Rosewood Market was opened in 1973, originally as a restaurant called the “Basil Pot”, and began carrying groceries until it took over. The Cafe is spectacular, tasty, and good healthy food. They pride themselves on local foods, fresh produce, organic and free range meats. They have a Deli, cater, and have a outside dining patio. We’ve had the pleasure to visit the store many times, and have indulged in their fine cooking, baking, and creations. Rating 4.5 stars out of 5.

The Hatchcover (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

The Hatchcover

252 East Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard * Colorado Springs, CO 80906-3720 * (719) 576-5223 * http://www.hatchcover.biz/
A double-story remote restaurant off of Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard – one of the last places you’d expect to find a seafood based restaurant and bar. Its more of a fried grill bar or tavern. Its a pretty well known neighbourhood hangout on the southside of Colorado Springs and is often called “The Hatch” by its patrons. Friendly staff and good service. I’ve been to the ‘hatch’ a few times. Always seems to be a popular spot for co-workers going away parties, birthday parties, and events. This visit I enjoyed the Crab cakes – which were pretty good for a landlocked area and at a decent price. Two Maryland crab medallion cakes werved with a side of chipotle aioli for $7.99. Just drank Grey Goose vodka and club soda so can’t comment on the beers. Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.

A Taste of Thai Spice (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

A Taste of Thai Spice

* off B Street & S. Academy, 1609 LaShelle Way, Colorado Springs, Colorado * 719.226.1999 *

A small hole-in-the-wall and kinda hard to get to, little Thai restaurant off Academy. Its worth the loop-arounds you have to drive to get to it. Quiet atmosphere, decorative, and extremely friendly staff. Pad Thai is pretty decent, and the Panang Curry is rather good. The Pad Khao King was good too. The Coconut soup and Thai Ice Tea rocks. The Peanut Chicken Skewers are very delicious. I haven’t tried many Thai restaurants in the Springs, but so far this is one of my favorites. Rated 4 stars out of 5.

Kalapana Village Cafe (Kalapana, Big Island, Hawaii)

Kalapana Village Cafe, Big Island, Hawaii

Kalapana Village Cafe
12-5037 Pahoa Kalapana Rd * Pahoa/Kalapana, HI 96778 * (808) 965-0121 *
An interesting little cafe near the entrance to walk out to Kalapana beach. Me and my friend Kawika dropped in for lunch and a drink. I tried the combination platter which had beef terriyaki, fish n’ chips, crab cakes, rice, and potato salad. Not bad for the price, but I’ve had better. Service was a bit slow, but decent. Staff seemed pre-occupied but were friendly. It hit the spot so no complaints and it’s not like you have any other options in this town that barely still exists no more than a tourist stop since Kalapana was destroyed by the lava flows in 1990. Rating: 2 stars out of 5.

The Chocolate Cafe, Chocolate Museum, Cologne, Germany

Aztec hotness

Chocolate Cafe
* Schokoladenmuseum Köln GmbH * (Chocolate Museum Cologne) * Am Schokoladenmuseum 1a * D-50678 Cologne * schokoladenmuseum.de
A nice little cafe/restaurant attached to Cologne’s infamous chocolate museum. Along the Rhine River with great panoramic views, great service, chocolate goodness, and delicious treats. Not many food meals are served as their primary focus is chocolate desserts. But the Spinach Quiche and the Chile Con Carne are fabulous as is the hot chocolate.

Jeremiah’s Pub (Vancouver, British Columbia)

Salmon Bennie

Jeremiah’s Neighbourhood Pub * 3681 4th Avenue West * Vancouver, BC V6R 1P2, Canada * (604) 734-1205 *

Its a typical Kitslano pub that is dime a dozen in the area, but has some of the best and prompt friendly service of your selections. Its only a five minute walk from Jericho Beach and its youth hostel, so great place to rest, chill, and recover from your travels. Its a favorite hotspot for Kitslano residents offering a sports bar atmosphere, lotto, pulltabs, Kino, and other gaming fun. Its decked in the style of a traditional English pub with two stories, hard wood floors and burgundy tones, but very Canadian. We dropped in on 12/27/08 for brunch around noon. They have a great brunch menu. I had the salmon bennie which was to die for. The Hangover sandwich is also very good. Bennies on croissants. Gotta love that more than the English muffin. A quaint and artsy little house cafe/restaurant off of Dale street with a great patio and dining area. Full bar, wine list, and contemporary European and American cuisine with Asian fusion. Adorned with original oil paintings and master craftsman sculptures they claim to be one of the most romantic getaway bistros in the city. We tried their signature soup – the Dilled Cream of Artichoke which was fabulous. I had the grilled eggplant sandwich which was delicious! Wonderful service. Top rating: 5 stars out of 5!

Shuga’s
702 S. Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80903 719.328.1412

A quaint little bar * cafe * restaurant in a nice cozy neighborhood on South Cascade between Cimarron and I-25. Nestled amongst cute little houses, this artsy warm bar has a friendly staff, food and drinks to die for, and an ambience quite undescribable. Japanese paper art decorates the ceiling, art deco on the walls.

I had the Chicken Club and coconut shrimp soup, and the dark and stormy cocktail. Delicious! I went on Tuesday night, while they were having their movie night – double feature: Labyrinth/Legend. While I couldn’t stay for both, I certainly enjoyed the night. Thanks!!! Rating 5 stars out of 5. Visited 1/23/07.
