Also known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is a vivrantly green state that belongs to the United States of America and is situated along the Atlantic Coast of the Southern United States. One of the most populated states in the U.S., it ranks #12 with over 7.7 million residents. Virginia was named after Queen Elizabeth I of England who was known as the "Virgin Queen" since she never married. Alternatively today though, Virginia is known as the "Place of Lovers". It has also been knicknamed "The Old Dominion" as King Charles II of England gave it the position of royal dominion along with England, Ireland, and Scotland. It is also known as the "Mother of Presidents" since many of the US Presidents came from the state. Historically its one of the founding and developmental blocks for the United States, its culture, and its government. Originally founded in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London. Its forefathering industries were tobacco, agriculture, colonialism, and slavery. It became the first permanent New World English colony and became one of the thirteen colonies that would take part in the American Revolution, and also the heart of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. Virginia's capital is Richmond while Virginia Beach is the most populated. Virginia borders and hosts much of the substance of the District of Columbia and supplies home, employment, and education for the region.
